Bright Angel campground closure
I’ve stayed at bright angel campground twice. This spring I am planning to do a night hike down into the canyon after doing day hiking my previous 2 trips. Plan is to leave around midnight and hike into the canyons arriving at the bottom around day break. Spend the dayrelaxing in canyon and then start hiking up again around sunset. I was planning to hike bright angel trail but see that it will be closed after the gardens so looks like it will be south Kaibab. With the campground still closed will we have any trouble accessing phantom ranch? I’m planning to book breakfast/dinner at the ranch. I just want to be sure that after the hike down we will be able to wander around/hang out at the bottom during the day. Typically when I’ve been down there I spend my time on the beach by the river and at the creek that runs beside the campground. Will these areas be open?
For your planned overnight hike into the Grand Canyon this spring, there are a few important points to clarify regarding Bright Angel Campground, South Kaibab Trail, and Phantom Ranch access.
Bright Angel Campground Closure:
- The closure of Bright Angel Campground affects overnight camping, meaning you cannot reserve a campsite there or camp overnight during your visit.
- However, day visitors are still allowed to access the bottom of the canyon. Trails, the riverbank, and the creek areas near the campground are typically open for daytime use.
- This means you can still relax, explore, and enjoy the Phantom Ranch area, including the beach along the Colorado River, without staying overnight at Bright Angel Campground.
Phantom Ranch Access and Meals:
- Booking breakfast or dinner at Phantom Ranch is still possible and is independent of campground availability. Your meal reservations ensure access to the dining facilities even if camping is closed.
- You can wander around the Phantom Ranch area, use the picnic areas, and enjoy the river and creek during the day.
Trail Considerations:
- With Bright Angel Trail partially closed, starting your hike on South Kaibab Trail is a good alternative. It is slightly steeper but provides spectacular views.
- Plan for adequate lighting, clothing, and water, especially for a midnight start, as the trail is more exposed and has fewer water stops compared to Bright Angel.
Summary:
- Bright Angel Campground closure affects overnight camping only.
- You can still spend the day at the bottom, explore Phantom Ranch, and relax by the river and creek.
- South Kaibab Trail is a suitable alternative for your night descent.
- Meal reservations at Phantom Ranch remain valid and give you full access to the ranch facilities.
So, your plan to hike down at midnight, spend the day relaxing at the bottom, and hike up around sunset is feasible despite the campground closure. Just be mindful of trail conditions and carry necessary supplies.
