favorite community calendars?
Aloha!
I'm interested in tapping into local community calendars for Waimea and Hilo
We're staying In Waikoloa Village and Volcano, but I was looking for non touristy events and thought these towns near where we're staying may have some fun ideas of things to do when nearby
I've already found the Hilo Town Market on the Friday and looking for something for Sat Feb 22- local music playing somewhere in Hilo, and also From Feb 15-21 near Waikoloa Village
TIA for any input you may have
Aloha! It's great that you're looking for local, non-touristy events during your stay on the Big Island. Both Waimea and Hilo offer a variety of community activities that give a taste of local life. Here are a few resources and suggestions for events and activities you can explore during your time in the area:
1. Hilo Events (Feb 22 and surrounding dates):
Hilo is a wonderful town with a vibrant local scene. Here's what you can explore:
- Hilo Town Market (Fridays): You’ve already found this one, and it’s definitely worth a visit. Local produce, crafts, and live entertainment often make it a fun, community-driven experience.
- Imiloa Astronomy Center (Feb 22): While it’s a bit more touristy, Imiloa often hosts community events, talks, and workshops related to Hawaiian culture and astronomy. Check their calendar for any special events.
- Hilo Farmers Market (Saturdays): Another great Saturday morning activity. It offers local produce, food trucks, and handmade goods, and there’s sometimes live Hawaiian music or hula performances, depending on the day.
- Hilo Community Center & Parks: Often hosts local music, performances, or events, especially during weekends. It's worth checking the community boards or calling ahead to ask about any music performances or local gatherings.
- Ken's House of Pancakes (for live music): While known for its pancakes, Ken's sometimes hosts live music, especially on weekends, offering a great opportunity to enjoy local talent in a low-key atmosphere.
2. Waikoloa Village Events (Feb 15–21):
Waikoloa Village and its nearby area might not be as bustling with local events as Hilo, but there are still some great options to explore during your stay:
- Waikoloa Village Farmers Market (Saturdays): Although it’s more tourist-oriented, the farmers market often features local produce and some live music. It’s a great way to mingle with the local community and enjoy the Hawaiian culture.
- Local Community Centers or Churches: Many churches in the Waikoloa area, such as the Waikoloa Congregational Church, host community music events or gatherings, especially on weekends. It’s worth checking in for any informal local music sessions.
- Waimea Town (15-minute drive from Waikoloa): While you're in the area, Waimea often has local music nights, cultural performances, and events. The Waimea Arts Council sometimes organizes events and local gatherings that may interest you.
- Parker Ranch in Waimea: A historic site that often holds local cultural events or celebrations. Keep an eye out for any special happenings during your dates.
3. General Resources for Local Events:
To stay up to date with events happening during your visit, here are some reliable resources:
- Big Island Now: A great site for community events and news, with an up-to-date list of local happenings across the Big Island.
- Hawaii Life: Another website that features community events across the islands, often including things like local music, festivals, and markets.
- Local Facebook Groups: Many community Facebook pages or groups post about local events. Look for groups like “Hilo Local Events” or “Waikoloa Community Events” to get up-to-date info from locals.
- Big Island Visitor Bureau: While typically more focused on tourists, the visitor bureau’s website often has a section dedicated to local events, especially those that may appeal to non-tourists.
4. Additional Tips:
- Check local coffee shops or restaurants for flyers or announcements on music nights or community events.
- For music, it’s always worth stopping by local breweries like the Hilo Brewing Company or restaurants like Pineapple’s for live local performances.
- In Waimea, the Waimea Community Center may have listings or local bands playing at nearby venues during the week.
I hope this helps, and you have a wonderful time enjoying the authentic local culture of the Big Island!
