Lightning Game

We are coming to town for a hockey game. What is the best hotel to stay at that doesn't cost a fortune? Embassy Suites is 600 a night. If we stay at the Tampa Riverwalk Hotel is it safe to walk there after a game? Thank you!

If you’re visiting Tampa for a Lightning game and want to stay near the arena without spending a fortune, there are several options to consider. The Amalie Arena is located downtown, so hotels in the Riverwalk area are convenient for walking to the game, but rates can fluctuate depending on events.

Regarding safety, the Tampa Riverwalk area is generally considered safe during the day and for evening events. After games, there will often be crowds of fans heading back to nearby hotels or public transportation, which adds to safety. As with any downtown area, it’s best to stay aware of your surroundings, stick to well-lit streets, and avoid wandering into empty side streets late at night.

  • Tampa Riverwalk Hotel: Convenient for walking to Amalie Arena. Safe for post-game walks, especially along the main Riverwalk path and nearby streets.
  • Hampton Inn & Suites Tampa/Ybor City/Downtown: Offers reasonable rates compared to Embassy Suites and is about a 5–10 minute drive to the arena. Ybor City is lively but check walking routes after dark.
  • Holiday Inn Express & Suites Tampa Downtown: Often more affordable than large suites, within a short distance to the arena. Downtown area is generally safe, especially around the main roads and hotel routes.
  • Homewood Suites by Hilton Tampa Downtown: Mid-range option with kitchenettes. About a 10-minute walk to Amalie Arena. Safe area with plenty of pedestrian traffic.

Other tips:

  • Consider using rideshare apps (Uber/Lyft) if you’re uncomfortable walking back late at night.
  • Check if the hotel offers shuttle service to the arena; some downtown hotels do during game days.
  • Booking early can help you secure better rates, as game days can inflate prices significantly.

Overall, staying near the Riverwalk is convenient and generally safe for walking to and from the Lightning game. If you want to save money, slightly further downtown or near channels like Ybor City can offer better rates with only a short drive or quick rideshare to the arena.
