Help with itinerary in King Salmon in July
I need input on where to stay close to airport in King Salmon. I just need a place to sleep not really looking for fish camp. I want to go to Brooks falls one day, Walrus viewing one day and fish one day. Any help on air plane charters to go to Katmai and walruss viewing , fishing guide for one day, and place to stay would be appreciated.
King Salmon is a small hub town primarily serving visitors heading to Katmai National Park, Lake Clark, and other Bristol Bay destinations. Since your priority is convenience to the airport and short stays for activities, staying close to King Salmon Airport (King Salmon Municipal Airport) is ideal.
Places to Stay:
- Katmai Wilderness Lodge/Inn in King Salmon: Offers simple, clean accommodations close to the airport and town center.
- Alaska Fish & Game Lodge: Not a full-service fishing camp for all guests; can be convenient if you want minimal walking to charter planes.
- Inn at King Salmon: Small, basic hotel, very close to the airport, good for a single night or two between excursions.
- King Salmon Motel: Budget-friendly, simple rooms, easy access to local services and airport.
Airplane Charters and Tours:
- Brooks Falls/Katmai Bear Viewing: Multiple local air taxis can fly you to Brooks Camp, including Alaska Coastal Air, Katmailand Aviation, and Air Taxi Services. Day trips are common, or you can stay overnight at Brooks Camp.
- Walrus Viewing: Charters from King Salmon to Walrus Islands are available, often coordinated by Katmailand Aviation or local bush pilots. These typically include a scenic flight and some wildlife viewing on the islands.
- Fishing Guide for One Day: Consider contacting local guides such as King Salmon Outfitters or Alaska River Adventures. They can provide full-day guided fishing trips on the Naknek or Kvichak Rivers with all gear included.
Tips for Planning:
- Book air charters early, as July is peak season.
- Most charters depart from King Salmon early in the morning; staying close to the airport saves time and stress.
- Confirm what each tour provides; for walrus trips, some are purely flightseeing, others include shore landings depending on weather and wildlife regulations.
- Consider combining your Brooks Falls trip with a flightseeing tour over Katmai to maximize bear and landscape viewing if you only have a day.
Summary:
For a short, activity-focused stay in King Salmon, the most practical approach is to book a motel or small inn near the airport, coordinate your air charter trips for Brooks Falls and walrus viewing in advance, and hire a local fishing guide for a full-day river experience. This setup minimizes transit time, allows flexible scheduling, and ensures you can enjoy each activity fully without staying in remote fish camps unless desired.
