Scenic Day Transfer Drive Anchorage to Seward

I am seeing a leisurely and scenic drive from Anchorage to Seward . I am 86. My granddaughter is 24. I want to make stop at interesting places. Do a bit off the tourist track. I do not want to stop at the Conservation Center and all the group drives seem to stop there. We like nature, little towns, birding, lakes, anywhere beautiful but without, preferably without bus loads of tourists. Thank you for any suggestions about private drivers or group tours.

The drive from Anchorage to Seward along the Seward Highway is one of Alaska’s most scenic routes, offering stunning views of mountains, glaciers, and coastline. Since you prefer a leisurely pace, smaller crowds, and interesting stops off the usual tourist track, there are several ways to make the day memorable for both you and your granddaughter.

For a relaxed and flexible experience, consider booking a private driver or small-group tour. This allows you to choose stops and move at your own pace without being tied to larger tour schedules.

Some highlights and suggested stops along the route include:

  • Beluga Point: A quiet spot for scenic views and birding, where beluga whales are sometimes spotted in Turnagain Arm.
  • Ptarmigan Creek or McHugh Creek Trails: Short, easy walks into lush forest or along the creek; great for seeing birds and smaller wildlife without a strenuous hike.
  • Girdwood: A charming small town with scenic spots, cafes, and opportunities to enjoy the Alyeska area without the crowds of bigger tourist stops.
  • Birding along Turnagain Arm: Multiple pullouts along the highway offer opportunities to watch shorebirds and other species, especially in tidal flats near Bird Point.
  • Scenic lakes or coves: Stop at places like Portage Lake or smaller roadside lakes for photography and enjoying nature quietly.

For private driver options, look for local companies specializing in personalized tours or transfers. Some companies that provide private or semi-private experiences include:

  • Alaska Private Car & Tours – offers custom scenic drives and flexible itineraries.
  • Anchorage Grand Tours – can tailor a day to your interests, including wildlife viewing and nature stops.
  • Local guides through platforms like Viator or GetYourGuide – filter for “private” or “small group” to avoid large tourist buses.

Tips for a comfortable day:

  • Start early to make the most of daylight and wildlife viewing opportunities.
  • Bring binoculars and a camera for birding and wildlife.
  • Pack light snacks or a picnic to enjoy at one of the scenic pullouts.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and layers; Alaska weather can change quickly.

With a private driver or small-group tour, you can focus on the beautiful, quieter spots along the highway, skipping the busier tourist centers, and enjoy a truly scenic and personalized Alaskan road experience.
