Off The Beaten Path

I like to do things off the beaten path, not the usual touristy things. See and do what the locals do. Experience the more natural or unusual. Taste “home” over “top experience”. I prefer to support local vendors and artists over screen-printed tees that are the same everywhere. Any recommendations for these types of things? Staying in Marathon and Key West. Thanks!

The Florida Keys, particularly Marathon and Key West, offer plenty of opportunities to go beyond the typical tourist experiences and immerse yourself in local culture, nature, and artisanal communities. Since you’re looking for off-the-beaten-path activities, here are several ways to explore what locals enjoy and support small businesses along the way.

In Marathon:

  • Local seafood spots: Skip the chain restaurants and try small local eateries like Keys Fisheries or The Island Fish Company. These places often serve freshly caught fish, conch fritters, and other regional specialties.
  • Wildlife encounters: Visit the Florida Keys Turtle Hospital for an educational and hands-on experience with sea turtle rehabilitation. It’s a small, nonprofit facility and gives insight into local conservation efforts.
  • Hidden beaches and parks: Sombrero Beach is quieter than more commercial beaches and has a relaxed, local vibe. For kayaking or paddleboarding, the nearby mangroves offer peaceful natural exploration away from crowds.
  • Local art and crafts: Check out small galleries and studios along US-1, where local artists sell handmade jewelry, paintings, and other crafts. The Marathon Community Park sometimes hosts artisan markets on weekends.
  • Fishing with locals: Book a small charter with a local fisherman for an authentic fishing experience rather than a large tourist operation. You can often catch grouper, snapper, or mahi-mahi.

In Key West:

  • Historic neighborhoods: Explore areas like Bahama Village or the quieter streets near White Street and Olivia Street. You’ll find local eateries, coffee shops, and murals away from the main tourist drag on Duval Street.
  • Farmers’ markets: The Key West Farmers’ Market (on Saturdays at the Old Town dock) is perfect for tasting homemade jams, pastries, fresh fruit, and supporting local growers and artisans.
  • Local bars and live music: Skip the commercialized bars and find smaller venues like The Green Parrot or Salute! On the Beach for live music and a local crowd.
  • Art studios and galleries: Wander into smaller galleries like the Studios of Key West or private artist studios that welcome visitors. Many offer one-of-a-kind pieces from local painters and sculptors.
  • Natural excursions: Take a kayak or paddleboard trip through the mangroves, or go snorkeling at the less crowded spots like Fort Zachary Taylor State Park instead of commercial boat tours.

Additional tips:

  • Ask locals for restaurant and coffee shop recommendations—they often know hidden gems not listed online.
  • Visit small roadside stands and local bakeries for unique treats and souvenirs made in the Keys.
  • Consider early morning walks to experience the sunrise, wildlife, and quiet side streets before tourist crowds arrive.

By focusing on local food, small galleries, nature excursions, and less crowded beaches, you can experience a more authentic side of the Keys that’s rich in culture, scenery, and flavor.
