How available/reliable is rideshare service in Marathon?

Hi,

I'm visiting Florida Keys this Memorial Day long weekend. My partner and I will go separate ways on a day with him going down to Key West for his activities and I will be in Marathon to do snorkeling, specifically with Captain Hook's for the 4 hour morning snorkeling. He will be taking the car since he needs to go further south and won't return until 4 to pick me up.

My question would be how available and reliable rideshare services are in Marathon on a weekday. I'm also planning more activities to fill that afternoon but they are not within walking distance from Captain Hook's but all general in the Marathon area. If they are not available, then I may have to book with another snorkel shop that is very close to other parasailing and jetski shops. Thank you.

Rideshare services in Marathon, like Uber or Lyft, are available, but they are generally less reliable than in larger cities or more tourist-heavy areas like Key West. Since Marathon is a smaller, more spread-out community, you might face longer wait times, especially during the off-peak hours or on weekdays when the area isn’t as busy. That said, it’s still possible to find a ride, but it may not be as consistent or quick as in busier areas.

For your Memorial Day weekend trip, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Availability: Rideshare availability in Marathon can vary. During peak tourist seasons or weekends, you might have a better chance of securing a ride, but don’t expect a high frequency of drivers. If you plan to rely on rideshares, it’s best to book well in advance, particularly if you need to be somewhere at a specific time.
  • Wait Times: Depending on the time of day and demand, you might experience longer wait times. While it’s not impossible to get a ride, it’s generally not as quick as in more urban areas.
  • Taxi Services: If rideshare services are scarce, local taxi services may be an alternative. Marathon has a few local taxi companies that can be more reliable than rideshares for getting around the area. You can ask Captain Hook’s or other local businesses for taxi numbers to keep on hand just in case.
  • Rental Scooters or Bikes: If you’re looking for more flexibility and don’t mind a bit of exercise, you could rent a scooter or bike for the day. Some shops near Captain Hook’s offer rentals, and this would allow you to get around the area independently.
  • Alternative Snorkel Shops: As you mentioned, you could consider snorkeling with a shop closer to other activities. There are several operators near Marathon that are within walking distance of parasailing and jet ski rentals. This could save you time and reduce the need for rideshare transportation.

In short, while rideshare services are available, they may not always be the most reliable option in Marathon, especially during less busy times. If you’re planning multiple activities in different parts of Marathon, you might want to consider other options like renting a bike or scooter, or having a backup plan with local taxis. Booking activities near each other might also help minimize the transportation hassle.

Enjoy your time in the Florida Keys, and have a great snorkeling experience!
