Getting around in Bikes
We'll be in Marathon for 2 weeks in March, staying at Ocean Isles Fishing Village. The plan is to rent bikes to get around Marathon. Is this feasible?
Probably biking to a beach, breakfasts and lunches also. Maybe dinners.
Really didn't want to rent a car so looking for opinions. Thanks
Biking in Marathon for two weeks is possible, but there are some important considerations to make your trip safe and enjoyable. Marathon is a relatively spread-out area, and while it is more bike-friendly than some other parts of the Keys, distances can add up quickly depending on where you want to go.
Feasibility:
- Biking to nearby beaches like Sombrero Beach is doable β itβs only a few miles from Ocean Isles Fishing Village, and there are bike lanes in certain areas.
- Breakfast and lunch spots along the main road (US-1 / Overseas Highway) are reachable by bike, but keep in mind that sidewalks are limited in some areas, and the road can be busy.
- Dinner options may require longer rides, and some restaurants are several miles away, which can be tiring if done daily.
- March weather is generally pleasant, so biking during the day is comfortable, but sun protection and hydration are key.
Tips for Biking Around Marathon:
- Consider renting a beach cruiser or hybrid bike with a comfortable seat β Marathon roads are mostly flat, but distances can be deceptive.
- Use reflective gear and lights, especially for evening rides.
- Plan routes using Google Maps or local advice to avoid heavy traffic areas; US-1 can be busy with fast-moving cars.
- For longer outings, consider combining biking with short Uber/Lyft rides or a scooter rental for flexibility.
- Bring locks β theft can happen, even in quieter areas.
Alternative Considerations:
- If your plan is mainly to go to beaches and nearby restaurants, biking is feasible and eco-friendly.
- For exploring farther areas in Marathon or taking day trips to nearby Keys, a car or occasional ride-share may be more practical.
- Some rentals may offer e-bikes, which can make longer distances much more manageable.
Overall, biking in Marathon is possible for short trips and local errands, but for full flexibility, especially for dinners or exploring farther sights, having a car or alternative transportation on standby is recommended.
