Family trip in March Key Biscayne/Miami

I am looking to plan a trip for my family (3 kids under 10) for mid March. I've gone through a few different ideas but based on the flights and timing I am thinking of doing 3 nights in Key Biscayne (Beach Haus) to do the pool, beach, rent kayak or boat tour. Then one night in Miami (Coral Gables) to do the zoo and other activities. Having one night in a separate hotel helps with the cost a little since I have points to use. I'd love any ideas for recommendations on attractions or dining. We aren't super adventurous as far as big hikes or water sports but generally like things like nature, animals, art, and science. Thanks!

Your planned itinerary sounds well-balanced for a family with young children, combining beach relaxation with educational and nature-oriented activities. Key Biscayne and Coral Gables are both family-friendly areas, with easy access to attractions while avoiding the busy crowds of Miami Beach.

Key Biscayne Activities

  • Crandon Park: Offers a beautiful, calm beach area perfect for kids, along with picnic spots and a nature center. You can rent kayaks or paddleboards here.
  • Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park: Offers a historic lighthouse, bike rentals, and scenic trails. The beach is quieter and great for sandcastle building.
  • Boat/Kayak Tours: Consider guided eco-tours or kayak trips to explore nearby islands and mangroves, which can be very kid-friendly and educational.

Coral Gables / Miami Activities

  • Miami Zoo (Zoo Miami): One of the top zoological parks in the U.S., featuring wide open spaces and animal exhibits suitable for children under 10.
  • Frost Science Museum: Includes interactive exhibits, an aquarium, and a planetarium — perfect for curious young minds.
  • Vizcaya Museum & Gardens: While a historic site, the gardens are spacious and interesting for kids to explore, and the architecture is beautiful for a stroll.

Dining Recommendations

  • Key Biscayne: For casual family meals, check out Rusty’s for seafood and casual fare or Cantina Beach for poolside dining.
  • Coral Gables / Miami: Try Glass & Vine in Coral Gables for outdoor dining in a garden setting. Another good option is Yardbird Southern Table & Bar for comfort food suitable for kids.

Tips:

  • Plan Key Biscayne activities in the morning or late afternoon to avoid peak sun exposure for kids.
  • Check ferry or boat tour schedules in advance, as March can be busy with spring breakers in Miami, though Key Biscayne is usually quieter.
  • Using one night in Coral Gables is a smart way to leverage points while still accessing major attractions like Zoo Miami or Frost Science.

Overall, your plan of three nights in Key Biscayne followed by a night in Coral Gables provides a nice mix of relaxation and educational fun, making it manageable and enjoyable for young children without feeling rushed.
