Any help welcome. Thanks
When flying from Edinburgh to Miami via Newark on United Airlines, here’s how it generally works for a single airline itinerary:
1. Baggage and Customs:
Even though your entire journey is on United, because Newark is your first point of entry into the U.S., you will need to collect your checked baggage at Newark to go through U.S. Customs and Border Protection. After clearing customs, you can recheck your bags for the connecting flight to Miami. Most international flights have signage and airline staff to guide passengers through this process efficiently.
- Pick up your checked baggage at the designated baggage claim area for your arriving flight.
- Proceed through U.S. Customs and Immigration with your passport and ESTA.
- After customs, there will be a re-check counter for your bags to be tagged for your onward flight to Miami. United staff usually assist with this.
2. Required Documents:
- Valid Passport.
- Approved ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization).
- Boarding passes for both flights — you can print them beforehand or use mobile boarding passes.
- Any COVID or health documentation if required at the time of travel (check latest U.S. entry rules).
3. Timing Considerations:
- Two hours is generally enough time at Newark if your incoming flight is on time. However, keep in mind that customs can sometimes take longer, and you’ll need to navigate baggage claim and recheck your bags.
- Follow signage for “Connecting Flights After Customs” — this usually leads you to the recheck counters without having to exit the secure area again.
4. Tips for a Smooth Connection:
- Fill out your customs declaration form in advance (usually provided on the plane or via mobile app).
- Have your passport and ESTA ready before you approach the immigration line.
- Check with United staff upon landing if you have any doubts about baggage recheck counters — they are very familiar with international-to-domestic connections.
- If your arriving flight is delayed, prioritize going through customs quickly to ensure you make your connecting flight.
In summary, yes — collect your checked bags at Newark for customs, then recheck them for Miami. Make sure your passport and ESTA are ready, and two hours should be sufficient for a smooth connection.
