Kunming - just 3 days in March - question reg. weather (?)

Hello!

I'll planning a three-week-trip in March, flights (from Germany) to and from Hanoi are already booked.

Up to now my plan ist as the following:

1. Arrival and two days in Hanoi.

2. Take the Vietnam train to Lao Cai and from there the Chinese train to Kunming (I like trains).

3. Two or three days in Kunming.

4. Take the LCR train to Luang Prabang.

5. Visit some places in Laos.

6. Flight from Vientiane to Hanoi and spend a few days there.

In this forum, my question is regarding the weather in Kunming in March.

I'm really not sure, I'm think about even taking a different route because of the - maybe - cold weather in Kunming. Maybe I could skip China and go by bus Hano - Laos.

Any suggenstions are highly appreciated. Any idea (of course it can just be an idea, not a forecast...) or experiences about the weather in Kunming in March?

Best regards, Matthias.

Kunming, known as the "Spring City," generally enjoys mild weather year-round due to its high elevation and subtropical plateau climate. March falls in the early spring, so you can expect moderate temperatures but also some variability.

Weather in March:

  • Average daytime temperatures: 15–20°C (59–68°F).
  • Nighttime temperatures: 6–10°C (43–50°F), so it can feel chilly in the mornings and evenings.
  • Precipitation: March is relatively dry compared to summer, but occasional light rain or drizzle is possible.
  • Sunshine: Moderate; cloudy or partly sunny days are common.
  • Clothing: Layered clothing is recommended, including a light jacket for mornings/evenings and comfortable clothing for daytime sightseeing.

Travel Considerations:

  • Kunming is generally comfortable in March, making sightseeing feasible. Major attractions like the Stone Forest, Green Lake, and Yunnan Nationalities Village are enjoyable without extreme weather.
  • If you prefer warmer or more tropical weather, skipping Kunming and traveling directly from Hanoi to Laos by bus is an option, but you would miss experiencing Yunnan’s unique scenery and culture.
  • The train route through Kunming can be scenic and interesting for train enthusiasts, but plan for slightly cooler conditions and occasional overcast days.
  • Transport and accommodations in Kunming are well-prepared for tourists even in early spring.

In conclusion, March in Kunming is generally pleasant with mild temperatures, making a 2–3 day visit feasible. Layered clothing and light rain protection are advised. Skipping China is possible, but you would miss the unique experience of Yunnan province and the scenic train journey from Hanoi.
