Temporary visa ban - transit OK?

Hey guys!

I fly to Asia a lot and have used the 144-hour temporary visa a few times in the last couple of years to save on flights (it was cheaper to stay at a hotel in China and fly out in a day or two).

However...

When I went to Shanghai last week this way, I was unpleasantly interrogated and eventually given a 5-year entry ban on temporary visas (I can come with a proper tourist visa). The officers giving me the ban spoke bad English & there was little time so I couldn't get my question answered:

Can I transfer in China, given I stay in the transit zone without entering the country?

What do you guys think? Any ideas or experiences?

Thanks!

Given your situation with a 5-year ban on temporary visas, it is important to understand the distinction between entering China under a visa-free transit policy and staying within the international transit area.

Key points to consider:

  • If you remain strictly in the international transit zone at the airport (do not pass through immigration), you are technically not entering China. This usually applies to connecting flights where you do not leave the airport’s secured area.
  • However, if you need to leave the airport—even to change terminals that require clearing immigration—you would need a valid visa or be eligible for a transit visa-free entry. With a 5-year ban on temporary visas, you would likely be denied entry at immigration.
  • Many travelers use the visa-free transit options (144-hour or 24-hour, depending on city) to exit the airport and spend time in China. In your case, this is explicitly prohibited due to the ban.

Recommendations:

  • Plan your travel so that you do not need to clear immigration in China. This means booking flights where your layover does not require entering the country, and staying in the international transit area.
  • Confirm with your airline that your connecting flights can be processed without passing through Chinese immigration. Some airports allow international-to-international transfers without entering the country.
  • Do not attempt to apply for or use any temporary visa or visa-free transit in China during the ban period, as this could lead to detention or extended travel restrictions.

In summary, with a 5-year ban on temporary visas, the only safe way to transit through China is to remain in the international transit zone and not pass through immigration. Any plan to leave the airport or enter China would be prohibited under your current restriction.
