Hotel Del Coronado Questions

My husband, two kids (11 and 7), and I are planning on staying at Legoland California for three nights and then spending four nights at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego. I’m currently thinking about booking a room in the Cabana section, as I love the idea of being able to walk directly out onto the pool deck. However, the Victorian also seems lovely and, from what I understand, is more centrally located closer to restaurants. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the Cabanas vs the Victorian? Are there any other things we should keep in mind when choosing a room? Also, how is the beach? Was it clean? Did anyone take the surfing lessons? Thank you for any advice, tips, and hacks!

The Hotel Del Coronado is a classic San Diego beachfront resort with multiple lodging options, and choosing between the Cabanas and the Victorian section largely depends on your priorities for convenience, ambiance, and access to amenities.

Cabanas Section

  • Advantages:
    • Direct pool access right outside your room—perfect if you want to spend a lot of time swimming or relaxing poolside with kids.
    • More modern and spacious rooms compared to some Victorian rooms.
    • Less walking to the pool and some family-friendly amenities.
  • Disadvantages:
    • Farther from the main Victorian building, so walking to restaurants, lobby, shops, and some activities requires a bit more time.
    • Can feel less historic or charming compared to the Victorian section.

Victorian Section

  • Advantages:
    • Centrally located with easy walking access to restaurants, shops, spa, and main hotel amenities.
    • Historic charm and classic architecture; staying here offers the full “Hotel Del experience.”
    • Better for guests who enjoy being in the heart of the resort and prefer a more traditional ambiance.
  • Disadvantages:
    • No direct pool access; you’ll need to walk a short distance to reach the pools.
    • Rooms can be smaller or older in style compared to Cabanas.

Other Tips and Considerations

  • Book early, especially for summer or holiday periods; the Cabanas fill quickly due to their poolside appeal.
  • Check if you prefer ocean views—some Cabanas and Victorian rooms offer better views than others.
  • Consider proximity to the beach if you want to spend a lot of time on the sand; both sections are beach-accessible, but walking from the Victorian may be slightly longer.
  • Hotel offers surf lessons and beach activities; the beach is generally clean and well-maintained, popular with families and tourists.
  • For families with kids, the Cabanas may be more convenient for quick pool breaks, snacks, or nap times.

Beach Information

  • The beach in front of Hotel Del Coronado is wide, sandy, and generally clean.
  • Surf lessons are available through the hotel or nearby surf schools; children and beginners can participate safely under instructor supervision.
  • Early morning or late afternoon tends to be less crowded if you want a more relaxed beach experience.

In summary, if your priority is pool convenience and family-focused time, the Cabanas are ideal. If you prefer historic charm and proximity to restaurants and central amenities, the Victorian section is the way to go. Both sections provide easy beach access and a full resort experience, so it comes down to your personal preference for ambiance and convenience.
