Solo trip the end of October

I will be traveling to San Diego at the end of October for a work trip. I plan on flying in a few days before to see the sites. I am not sure where to stay. Are there certain areas of San Diego that are somewhat "sketchy" to stay on your own?

Also, I'm not sure I want to rent a car. I'm concerned about the traffic and whether it is a difficult area to navigate. Are the trolley and bus systems easy to follow?

Additionally, are there any areas you could suggest that would be suitable for a solo traveler? I'm interested in the La Jolla area and any areas with shops.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

For a solo trip to San Diego at the end of October, selecting a safe and convenient area is key, especially if you prefer not to rent a car. San Diego is generally safe in many parts, but some neighborhoods are best avoided or approached with extra caution, particularly at night.

Areas that are considered "sketchy" or higher risk for solo travelers include parts of East Village after dark, certain sections of Barrio Logan, and some areas around City Heights. These neighborhoods can have higher crime rates, and while they are fine to pass through during the day, staying overnight there may not feel comfortable for a solo traveler.

If you want to avoid driving, San Diego's trolley and bus systems are fairly user-friendly. The trolley has four main lines (Blue, Orange, Green, and Silver) that cover downtown, Old Town, Mission Valley, and the border area. Buses complement the trolley routes, but trips can take longer than driving. Using a transit app will help you navigate efficiently.

Recommended areas for a solo traveler interested in safety, walkability, shops, and proximity to attractions:

  • La Jolla: Upscale, very safe, walkable, and close to beaches, shopping, and restaurants. Ideal if you want a quieter, scenic stay.
  • Downtown / Gaslamp Quarter: Great for nightlife, dining, and walking to sites like the USS Midway Museum or Seaport Village. Safe during the day and early evening; just be mindful late at night.
  • Pacific Beach / Mission Beach: Active areas with shops, cafes, and the boardwalk. More casual and fun for solo travelers who enjoy the beach scene. Some parts can be rowdy at night.
  • Old Town: Historic area with shops, restaurants, and easy trolley access. Good for tourists and generally safe, especially around the main tourist areas.

For a stress-free solo trip without a car, consider staying in La Jolla if you want a quiet, safe environment with shops and restaurants within walking distance. Alternatively, staying downtown or in Pacific Beach gives you easy access to sites via the trolley or short rideshares. Always check hotel reviews for safety and convenience, and consider booking accommodations near main streets rather than side alleys.
