Visiting in Feb 2025. Where can I get winter gear?

HI,

We are visiting in end Feb to see the northern lights. Since the weather is way below freezing and we woudl be outdoors at night, where can I get winter gear? is there a place we can rent?

When we visited sweden, the tour companies provide us the heavy shoes and jackets. Im not sure about Alaska.

Visiting Fairbanks in February can be extremely cold, often reaching -20°F (-29°C) or lower, especially at night when you’re out trying to see the aurora. Dressing in proper winter gear is crucial for comfort and safety. Fortunately, there are several options in Fairbanks to either purchase or rent high-quality cold-weather clothing.

Places to Rent Winter Gear:

  • Alaska Aurora Adventures / Northern Alaska Tour Companies: Many aurora tour operators provide rental winter gear such as insulated jackets, pants, boots, gloves, and hats when you book a tour. This is similar to what you experienced in Sweden, and it ensures you are properly equipped for subzero temperatures.
  • Fred Meyer / REI Fairbanks: These stores sometimes offer rental gear, but more commonly sell heavy winter jackets, insulated snow pants, boots, gloves, and hats. If you prefer owning or bringing your gear home, these are good options to stock up locally.
  • Outdoor Outfitters / Alaskan Guide Outfitters: Some local outfitters rent full Arctic gear for short-term use. They often carry extreme cold-rated boots and jackets suitable for aurora viewing and winter activities.

Purchasing Winter Gear in Fairbanks:

  • For long-term comfort, consider buying high-quality insulated jackets (down or synthetic), thermal layers, snow pants, and waterproof insulated boots. Brands like The North Face, Columbia, Patagonia, and Carhartt are widely available.
  • Local stores in Fairbanks, such as Alaska Mountaineering & Hiking, offer winter gear specifically designed for Alaskan winters.
  • Layering is key: thermal base layers, fleece mid-layers, and an insulated outer layer along with warm socks, hats, and gloves.

Tips:

  • If you’re booking a tour, check ahead whether they provide gear or if you need to rent/purchase it separately.
  • For aurora viewing, ensure boots are insulated and waterproof, gloves are warm and windproof, and outer layers are wind-resistant.
  • Consider hand and foot warmers for extra comfort during long night exposures outdoors.

Overall, while some tour operators provide gear, Fairbanks has several rental and retail options to make sure you stay warm for your Northern Lights adventure.
