How many days in Xinjiang area

Hey guys,

I am flying in to Urumqi from Chengdu. I want to visit Tianchi Lake, Turpan and some historic sites. I am a solo traveller. Wonder how many days to soak in the atmosphere. I am a fan of the ‘Journey to the West’ myth. I will fly to Almaty after Urumqi. Can someone draft me a brief itinerary.

Thanks a lot

For a first-time solo traveler to Xinjiang, visiting Urumqi, Tianchi Lake, Turpan, and historic sites, I would suggest planning around 5–6 days to comfortably soak in the atmosphere without feeling rushed.

Here’s a brief suggested itinerary:

  • Day 1 – Arrival in Urumqi: Arrive from Chengdu, settle into your hotel, and explore local markets such as Erdaoqiao Grand Bazaar to get a feel for Uyghur culture.
  • Day 2 – Tianchi Lake (Heavenly Lake): Take a day trip to Tianchi Lake, which is about 1.5–2 hours drive from Urumqi. Enjoy the scenery, boat rides, and mountain views. Return to Urumqi in the evening.
  • Day 3 – Urumqi historic and cultural sites: Visit the Xinjiang Regional Museum, Red Hill, and local mosques. If interested in “Journey to the West” myth connections, explore any Buddhist relics and temples in Urumqi that may reference the Tang Monk pilgrimage.
  • Day 4 – Travel to Turpan: Take a high-speed train or private tour to Turpan (approx. 2–3 hours). Check into a local guesthouse and explore the city center.
  • Day 5 – Turpan sightseeing: Visit the Jiaohe Ancient City ruins, Karez irrigation system, and Emin Minaret. If time allows, climb the Flaming Mountains and see the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves.
  • Day 6 – Return to Urumqi / Departure: Head back to Urumqi for your flight to Almaty. Depending on your flight time, you may have a few hours to explore Urumqi one last time or relax at the hotel.

Tips for a solo traveler:

  • Consider booking small group tours or private drivers for Turpan and Tianchi Lake to simplify logistics.
  • Xinjiang is vast; internal flights or high-speed trains save time compared to buses.
  • Weather can vary greatly between Urumqi, Tianchi Lake, and Turpan, so pack layers.
  • Bring cash in CNY for smaller vendors, especially in rural or historic sites.

With this itinerary, you’ll have a balanced mix of natural scenery, historic sites, and cultural immersion while keeping a comfortable pace for solo travel.
