We're coming from the UK in August for 5 days for the first time and keen to enjoy all the sites. However, we keep a kosher diet and while we will have a car, I don't really want to spend all my time driving up and down to the kosher restaurants. (which I understand are mostly around LaJolla Shores.) If I book a hotel around Mission Bay, how long is the drive going to be realistically?
Or should I look at nice hotels around La Jolla? .Will that enable us to drive easily to tourist areas each day? We're two adults and two older teenagers so we really need a room with 4 beds ( or two queens and a sofa bed)
We'd like a nice beach/resort type hotel so was looking at something like the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay, but not sure if that is going to be too convenient for the Kosher restaurants
Many thanks
San Diego has a relatively small kosher dining scene compared to some other major cities, with the majority of kosher restaurants, bakeries, and grocery stores concentrated around La Jolla Shores and the Carmel Valley area. For travelers who keep kosher, this means that location is a significant consideration if you want convenient access to meals without spending excessive time driving each day.
If you stay around Mission Bay, such as at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay, you will have a beautiful resort experience with easy access to the bay, beach activities, and family-friendly amenities. However, the drive to kosher restaurants in La Jolla Shores is typically around 15–25 minutes each way, depending on traffic. During busy summer periods, it can take longer, so planning meals ahead and considering takeout or delivery options can help.
Staying in La Jolla itself gives you closer proximity to the kosher scene, which can be convenient if dining out is a priority. La Jolla is also a beautiful area with scenic beaches, shops, and restaurants, and it’s within reasonable driving distance to major San Diego attractions such as Balboa Park, the Gaslamp Quarter, and SeaWorld, usually around 15–25 minutes depending on traffic.
Hotel Location Considerations:
Room Requirements:
Overall, if kosher dining convenience is a top priority, staying in La Jolla is likely the better option. If a resort-style beach experience with large pools and on-site amenities is more important, Mission Bay is excellent, but you should plan for a daily drive to reach kosher restaurants.
For sightseeing, both areas allow easy access to central San Diego attractions, though La Jolla’s slightly northern location means you’ll be a bit farther from downtown and the Zoo compared to Mission Bay. With a car, both locations are manageable.
