South Point or Orleans?

I have flights booked for Mid-April. The dates were chosen to see a show at South Point. This is a short, 3-night solo trip. The obvious 1st thought is just to stay at South Point. But I am also considering Orleans.

The price difference isn't all that important, although SP will be about $40 more per night. Balancing this is that if I stay at Orleans I will have to get to SP for the show, which will cost $30 each way. Also I could take the free shuttle from SP to the airport, saving me another $30.

I haven't stayed at South Point in 4-5 years, but I am familiar with the property. I understand the poker room has improved, which is a big deal to me. It's hard to overstate the convenience of seeing a show at your own hotel, especially when it is isolated like South Point. But I know if I check into SP I may not ever leave. They have everything I need. So, it won't be a trip to Vegas it will be a trip to South Point.

I am VERY comfortable at Orleans. I know where everything is, and I don't feel isolated at all if I want to spend time elsewhere. The BIG PLUS here is McMullan's across the street---my favorite place to eat/drink in Las Vegas. I would probably have a couple of breakfasts there and at least one dinner. The rest of the dining options at the 2 properties are fairly comparable.

I will probably book both hotels today and make a decision later. But I would appreciate any input recommending one over the other. Someone may bring up a point I haven't considered.

TIA

It sounds like you’ve already considered a lot of the key factors in your decision, but here are a few additional points to help you decide between South Point and Orleans:

South Point Pros

  • Convenience of the Show: If the main purpose of your trip is the show at South Point, staying there gives you the ultimate convenience. You won’t have to worry about transportation or travel time to the venue, which is a big bonus, especially for a solo trip. You can just walk to the show and enjoy the evening without hassle.
  • Improved Poker Room: Since poker is important to you, South Point’s poker room upgrade is a significant benefit. If you plan to play poker during your trip, having an upgraded, well-established poker room at your fingertips could be a deciding factor.
  • All-Inclusive Resort: As you mentioned, South Point has everything you need, including entertainment, dining, and gaming options. You might never need to leave the property, which can be a great experience for a solo trip where relaxation is the priority. Plus, the resort’s amenities are generally top-notch, with multiple restaurants, a large pool, and a cinema.

South Point Cons

  • Isolation: South Point is a bit isolated compared to Orleans, meaning you may feel cut off from the main Strip action. If you’re looking to explore other areas of Vegas and experience its nightlife, South Point may not be the most convenient choice, as it requires a longer commute to get to the main attractions on the Strip.
  • Price: South Point is $40 more per night, which may seem negligible, but you’ll also need to account for the cost of getting to and from South Point for the show if you’re staying at the Orleans. That $30 round-trip fare for transportation adds to your overall trip cost, so it’s something to keep in mind.

Orleans Pros

  • Familiarity and Comfort: If you’re already comfortable with Orleans and enjoy its atmosphere, it’s a great option. You’ll know where everything is and feel at ease. Plus, it’s a more central location, so you’ll have easier access to other parts of Vegas if you want to venture out.
  • McMullan's: You mentioned McMullan’s being one of your favorite spots in Las Vegas. That’s a significant plus if you love the food and drink there. Being so close to it, you’ll have the convenience of enjoying some of your favorite meals without needing to travel far.
  • Variety of Options: Orleans has a variety of entertainment options and restaurants, and its location is a lot more convenient for checking out places on and off the Strip. If you want to leave the resort and explore, Orleans offers better access to local attractions.

Orleans Cons

  • Extra Travel for the Show: You’ll need to factor in the transportation cost and time to get to South Point for the show. If you’re set on seeing the show, this could be a bit of an inconvenience.

Final Thoughts

If the primary focus of your trip is to see the show and enjoy a relaxed, all-inclusive experience, South Point is the winner. The convenience of having everything on-site might make the $40 per night difference worth it, especially if you want to avoid the hassle of getting to and from the show. However, if you prefer to stay somewhere more central, with access to more variety in terms of dining and entertainment (and you're not worried about the show logistics), Orleans is a great choice. The proximity to McMullan’s and your comfort with the property make it a solid option as well.

It ultimately depends on what’s more important for you—convenience for the show and poker versus exploring the city and your favorite local spots. Either way, both are good choices depending on your priorities!
