where to see sunrise from Bright Angel Lodge

Staying at the Bright Angel lodge in April. Read that Mather Point is crowded and we would have to get in our car and park near Mather in time for sunrise.....is there a closer place to our hotel that we can see the sunrise?

If you’re staying at Bright Angel Lodge, you are in a great location for sunrise viewing without having to drive to Mather Point. While Mather Point is famous and can be crowded, there are several closer options that are quieter and offer beautiful views of the canyon at sunrise.

Sunrise Viewing Options Near Bright Angel Lodge

  • Bright Angel Trailhead Area: Just steps from the lodge, the trailhead area offers unobstructed views of the canyon to the east. Arrive a little early to find a comfortable spot along the rim.
  • Kolb Studio Viewpoint: A short walk west along the Rim Trail from the lodge, Kolb Studio provides an elevated view of the canyon and the Colorado River. It’s less crowded than Mather Point but still stunning at sunrise.
  • Rim Trail East Section: Walking east from Bright Angel Lodge along the Rim Trail, you’ll find multiple quiet outlooks. Many of these spots are tucked away from the main tourist flow and allow for an intimate sunrise experience.
  • Verkamp’s Visitor Center Area: Just a 5-minute walk from the lodge, this area gives nice views toward the east and south, and usually has fewer people than the more popular lookout points.

Tips for Sunrise Viewing

  • Check the exact sunrise time for your visit in April and plan to arrive 15–20 minutes early for the best lighting.
  • Bring a small flashlight or headlamp for walking along the Rim Trail in pre-dawn darkness.
  • Dress in layers as mornings can be chilly even in April.
  • If you want photographs without people, walk a bit further along the Rim Trail east or west for a more secluded view.
