Night time and safety

We are taking a moonlight tour in April. 5 people. Tours are over at 10:30pm. We are staying at Hyatt place on new York ave NE Is it safe to walk from union station to the Hyatt ? Looks to be a 20 min walk

Walking in Washington DC at night can vary in safety depending on the neighborhood and the time. The area from Union Station to the Hyatt Place on New York Ave NE is a mix of commercial and residential blocks. During the day, it is quite active and well-patrolled, but late at night, the streets can be quieter.

Here are some considerations for your walk after a moonlight tour that ends around 10:30 pm:

  • The walk is about 1 mile, roughly 20 minutes, mostly along well-lit streets such as New York Avenue and nearby parallel streets.
  • Union Station area is generally safe, with security presence and cameras, but as you move slightly northeast, some blocks are less populated at night.
  • Walking as a group of five is safer than walking alone, and staying on main roads with lights and some pedestrian traffic is recommended.

Alternative options to make your return safer and more comfortable:

  • Taxi or rideshare: Using Uber, Lyft, or a local taxi for a 5-person group is quick and inexpensive, taking 5-7 minutes.
  • Public transportation: The Metro is closed after 11:30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, so it could be an option if timing aligns, but not guaranteed late at night.
  • Hotel shuttle or walking with a guide: Some hotels offer shuttle services; check if Hyatt Place has this option, especially for late arrivals.

In summary, the walk is not particularly dangerous, especially in a group, but for peace of mind and convenience, a short taxi or rideshare is recommended after a late-night tour.
