Federal holiday COLUMBUS DAY- What is open?
Sorry gonna try this again. Other than the smithsonian is there anything that might be open on Columbus day? Backup plan: husband wants to see Arlington so figured we could do thus. Maybe play in Alexandria? And Smithsonian? What else might be open? We already have plans for fbi, capital, white house...what about Segway tours? Are they worth it for some fun way to see monuments since I don't want to stop at all of them? We also have Sunday available so recommends there appreciated. TiA
Columbus Day is a federal holiday, which means many federal offices and some attractions may be closed. However, in Washington DC, you will find plenty of options that remain open, especially outdoor sites, private museums, and commercial tours.
Here are some options for things to do on Columbus Day:
- Smithsonian Museums: As you mentioned, all Smithsonian museums are open. This includes the National Air and Space Museum, Natural History Museum, American History Museum, and others.
- Arlington National Cemetery: Open year-round, including federal holidays. You can see the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and visit the Kennedy gravesites.
- Old Town Alexandria: Shops, restaurants, and waterfront areas are generally open. It's a charming area for walking and dining.
- Private Museums: Museums like the International Spy Museum and Newseum (if still operating) may be open since they are privately operated. Always check their websites for holiday hours.
- Segway or Bike Tours: Many companies operate regardless of federal holidays. Segway tours can be a fun, efficient way to see the monuments without walking all day, especially if you want to cover more ground quickly.
- Monuments and Memorials: Outdoor monuments such as the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument grounds, Jefferson Memorial, and World War II Memorial are all accessible.
- Georgetown and Shopping Areas: Areas like Georgetown, Penn Quarter, and downtown shopping districts remain open, with restaurants, cafes, and retail shops operating normally.
For Sunday, most of the same options remain available, with the added benefit that weekday crowds may be lighter at some locations. Outdoor areas and private tours are generally your best bet for flexibility. Columbus Day can be a great opportunity to combine indoor museum visits with outdoor sightseeing without relying on federal offices being open.
Tips:
- Check websites of private attractions for holiday hours.
- Plan to do popular spots like Arlington early in the day to avoid crowds.
- Consider booking Segway tours in advance since they can fill up on holiday weekends.
In summary, while some federal buildings may be closed, you have a wide range of options including Smithsonian museums, Arlington, outdoor monuments, Alexandria, and private tours. Segway tours are worthwhile if you want a fun, quick way to see multiple monuments.
