Stargazing advice near Tucson, ASAP
Hi, last minute trip this weekend to Tucson. My sister would love to do some stars, but Mt Lemmon and Kitt are both sold out. Any other group activities that you know of where someone could tell us what we're looking at :-). If not, we're staying in Oro Valley, so any place that you could recommend we could drive to and I can use an app. (App recs also appreciated).
Also any recommendations for restaurants or bars in Oro Valley?
As always, thanks so much.
If Mt. Lemmon and Kitt Peak observatories are fully booked, there are still several options for stargazing near Tucson where you can enjoy dark skies and identify stars, planets, and constellations.
Here are some group and guided options:
- Gates Pass & Tucson Mountain Park: A short drive from Oro Valley, these spots are accessible, dark, and scenic. While there isn’t always a guided program, you can often find informal gatherings of amateur astronomers with telescopes, especially on weekends.
- Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association (TAAA) public nights: Check if they have any last-minute star parties at Catalina State Park or Reid Park. They often host free or low-cost guided stargazing events with telescopes.
- Stargazing tours or private guides: Some local companies in Tucson offer private or small-group astronomy tours even last-minute, where an astronomer will guide you with telescopes and explain the night sky. A quick online search or calling local tour operators may yield openings.
If you decide to go independently, here are some excellent self-guided stargazing spots and tips:
- Sabino Canyon Recreation Area: Wide open spaces, limited light pollution, and easy access.
- Colossal Cave Mountain Park: About a 45-minute drive from Oro Valley; excellent dark sky with open vistas.
- App recommendations:
- SkySafari – Interactive and detailed with telescope control option.
- Star Walk 2 – Easy-to-use augmented reality view of the sky.
- Stellarium Mobile – Excellent for tracking constellations and planets.
For restaurants and bars in Oro Valley, some recommended options are:
- La Margarita Restaurant: Mexican cuisine with a casual atmosphere.
- Village Bake Shop & Cafe: Great for breakfast or light lunch with bakery treats.
- Picazzo’s Healthy Italian Kitchen: Italian cuisine with a focus on fresh and healthy ingredients.
- Postino East: Known for wine, bruschetta, and a relaxed bar vibe.
Plan to bring warm layers for stargazing as desert nights can get chilly, and allow some time to get away from city lights for optimal viewing. Even without a formal guided tour, using an app like SkySafari or Star Walk while parked at Gates Pass or Sabino Canyon will give you an excellent stargazing experience.
