April anniversary trip

We love Durango and want to visit for a week for our 39th anniversary in early April. Debating on accommodations. We can get a really good price for a room at Mainstay Suites but do we want a more romantic hotel? Torn between it's just a place to sleep and this is a special occasion. We know we want to visit the Pour House and drive the million dollar hwy. Orvis hot springs is also on our list. Any suggestions are welcome!

Durango in early April is a beautiful spot for an anniversary trip, with charming streets, mountain scenery, and plenty of activities to enjoy together. While Mainstay Suites offers a very reasonable price and comfortable accommodations, for a 39th anniversary you might consider a more romantic option to make the occasion feel special.

Accommodation Suggestions:

  • Strater Hotel: This historic hotel in downtown Durango offers Victorian charm, unique rooms, and a romantic ambiance. Staying here would put you within walking distance to restaurants, shops, and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
  • General Palmer Hotel: Boutique-style with cozy rooms and great location. It provides a more intimate experience than a standard suite.
  • Casual but Comfortable Option: If you prioritize convenience and budget, Mainstay Suites is fine, but pairing it with a few special dinners or a private activity can elevate the romantic feel.

Activities for a Romantic Week:

  • Million Dollar Highway: A must-do scenic drive with dramatic cliffs and mountain views. Allocate a full day with stops in Ouray and Silverton for short hikes or photo opportunities.
  • Orvis Hot Springs: Perfect for a relaxing soak. Go in the morning or evening for a more private, serene experience.
  • The Pour House: Great spot for a casual yet enjoyable dinner. Consider making reservations if possible, as it can get busy.
  • Durango & Silverton Train: Even a short segment of the ride can be a romantic experience with incredible mountain views.
  • Downtown Strolls: Walk along Main Avenue, explore local shops, galleries, and maybe enjoy a coffee or dessert at one of the local cafés.

Other Tips:

  • Early April can still be chilly, especially in higher elevations like the Million Dollar Highway. Dress in layers and check weather reports before heading out.
  • Consider booking one special dinner at a higher-end restaurant to complement a more budget-conscious hotel if you decide on Mainstay Suites.
  • If you’re comfortable splurging, a night or two at a boutique or historic hotel could make your anniversary trip memorable, while the rest of the week could be in a simpler accommodation.

Overall, you have a good mix of adventure, relaxation, and romance. If your priority is celebrating the anniversary in style, choosing a more romantic hotel or historic property is recommended, but Mainstay Suites can work if supplemented with special experiences during your week in Durango.
