2 nights in Durango

Driving from Albuquerque to Durango. Spending night, train ride the next day, spending that night and then heading back to Albuquerque. Would like recommendations on a reasonably priced hotel for these 2 nights. Would like one with breakfast available. Also how is parking at the train station?

Great plan to spend a couple of nights in Durango — it gives you time to ride the train, explore downtown, and enjoy the mountain-town atmosphere. Here are some solid hotel options, along with useful info on parking at the train station:

Recommended Hotels (Reasonably Priced + Breakfast)

  • Residence Inn by Marriott Durango Downtown — This is one of the most convenient hotels if you want to stay near the depot. It’s an all-suites property, so you’ll have more space. It offers a free hot breakfast buffet daily. On-site parking is also available.
  • Best Western Durango Inn & Suites — A budget-friendly choice with a complimentary continental or hot breakfast. It’s not right in the depot block, but still very accessible by car.
  • Hampton Inn by Hilton Durango — Popular with travelers and praised for its full, free breakfast. Rates are often quite reasonable for two nights, especially if booked in advance.

Parking at the Train Station (Durango Depot)

  • The official Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&SNG) parking lot is located at 209 W College Drive, right next to the rail yard.
  • Parking fees are $10 per car (for standard vehicles) per day.
  • You can purchase your parking pass when you book your train tickets — either online or by phone — which guarantees you a spot.
  • If you’re staying downtown, some hotels (especially the Residence Inn) are within walking distance of the depot, which means you might not need to use the parking lot at all.

My Recommendation:

- Book Residence Inn if you want the easiest access to the depot and a very comfortable stay. - Use the D&SNG parking lot for your car if you’re driving in for the train ride. Buying parking in advance is a smart move, especially in busy seasons. - Arrive at least 30–45 minutes before your train departs — the railroad recommends this to allow for parking and boarding.

Enjoy your train ride and your time in Durango — it’s a charming place!
