Trailer camping between Durango and Mesa Verde

Looking for a campground in between Mesa Verde and Durango around June of next year. I have a pop up camper that's 24 feet when fully set up, and would need electricity. Water not necesarry, but would be helpful. We may also have a second family join us in a tent and rent out a second site. I saw HRT Campground but reviews are mixed. Any local spots that would better fit my needs?

Camping between Durango and Mesa Verde National Park offers several options for those traveling with trailers or pop-up campers. June is a popular month, so early reservations are recommended. Since you need electricity and potentially water, it’s important to select campgrounds that can accommodate your 24-foot pop-up and possibly an additional tent site for a second family.

Options to consider:

  • Mesa Verde National Park Campgrounds:
The park itself has two main campgrounds—Morefield Campground near the park entrance and developed sites with electric hookups. Morefield has 267 sites, some with electricity, water nearby, and restrooms. It’s very convenient for visiting the park, though it can fill up quickly in June.
  • Hogback Campground / Durango KOA:
Located south of Durango, about halfway to Mesa Verde. KOA sites usually provide electric hookups and water, and some have pull-through options suitable for 24-foot pop-ups. They are more reliable than some smaller dispersed sites in terms of amenities and space.
  • Ute Mountain Tribal Park / Dispersed Campgrounds:
Along County Road 203 and smaller roads between Durango and Mesa Verde, there are BLM and tribal lands offering dispersed camping. Some areas may allow trailers and have electricity, but amenities are limited. Best for experienced campers comfortable with minimal facilities.

Tips for planning:

  • Reserve early, especially for Morefield or KOA sites, since June is high season.
  • Check site dimensions before booking to ensure your 24-foot pop-up fits comfortably.
  • Consider booking adjacent sites if traveling with a second family to keep groups together.
  • Verify which sites have electricity, and whether water is at the site or at a central location.
  • If flexibility is possible, arriving mid-week may offer less crowded options.

In summary, Morefield Campground in Mesa Verde or Durango KOA are likely your best options for reliable hookups, ease of access, and comfort for a 24-foot pop-up camper and a second tent site. Dispersed sites are more rustic but could work if amenities are not essential.
