Restaurants with Gluten Free options

Hi

We will be staying 2 nights at the Emblem Hotel on Sutter Street. I've been looking at local restaurants but the choices in that area seem a bit limited, especially as we need somewhere that offers a decent GF menu. We don't want anything fancy, an the issue is an intolerance (not celiac). Would we be better looking at a different part of the city for more choice? And if so where? We don't mind getting a taxi / Uber.

Thanks

The area around the Emblem Hotel on Sutter Street is convenient for staying in central San Francisco, but dining options with a good gluten-free menu may be somewhat limited compared to other neighborhoods. While there are a few cafes and restaurants nearby offering GF choices, expanding your search to other areas of the city will give you more variety, especially for casual meals.

Neighborhoods worth considering for gluten-free options:

  • Union Square / Downtown: Many restaurants here cater to diverse dietary needs, including gluten-free options. It’s easy to get a taxi or Uber from your hotel, and you’ll find casual spots for lunch or dinner with GF-friendly menus.
  • Mission District: Known for trendy eateries and health-conscious dining, the Mission offers several restaurants with comprehensive GF menus, including Mexican, Californian, and vegan options.
  • Soma / South of Market: This area has casual bistros, cafes, and modern American restaurants that often highlight GF choices. It’s a bit further from your hotel but reachable by short ride.
  • North Beach: While primarily Italian, many places in North Beach can accommodate gluten-free pasta or pizza on request. The neighborhood has a lively atmosphere for evening dining.

Tips for dining with gluten intolerance in San Francisco:

  • Call ahead or check online menus to confirm GF options. Many restaurants now clearly label these, but policies can change.
  • Use apps or websites like FindMeGlutenFree to locate highly-rated GF-friendly spots nearby.
  • If traveling by Uber/taxi, plan one or two destinations per outing to maximize your dining experience and minimize travel time.
  • Casual cafes and modern bistros often have GF baked goods, sandwiches, and salads, which may be more suitable for a quick lunch near your hotel.

In summary, while there are a few gluten-free-friendly options near the Emblem Hotel, you’ll have much more choice and variety by visiting Union Square, the Mission District, or Soma. Using rideshares will make it easy to explore these neighborhoods without the need for public transport or long walks.
