Taking F line during fleet week-reliable?
I need to be at a meeting near the Montgomery BART station on Friday of Fleet week, and surprisingly, the Holiday Inn express fisherman’s warf location is low enough in points that I could use a free night certificate (I usually end up staying in Berkeley when I fly in for these meetings due to the lower cost).
It looks like the F Street Car would be a great option to get to my meeting in the morning, but is it overwhelmed during fleet week? I’m having visions of how Transit gets after sporting events, etc..
Any advice? Thanks
The F-Market & Wharves streetcar line is generally a scenic and convenient way to travel from Fisherman’s Wharf to downtown San Francisco, including Montgomery BART. However, Fleet Week can dramatically increase crowds along the waterfront and on public transit.
Here are some considerations and tips for reliability during Fleet Week:
- Crowds: The F line will likely be extremely crowded in the mornings, especially around the tourist-heavy areas of Fisherman’s Wharf. Boarding might require waiting for multiple cars to pass before you can get on, particularly if you are traveling around popular parade or air show times.
- Timing: Allocate extra travel time—plan for at least 30–45 minutes more than usual to reach Montgomery BART during Fleet Week mornings. F line streetcars run every 10–20 minutes normally, but delays are common during large events.
- Alternatives:
- Consider taking a ride-share (Uber/Lyft) or taxi if you have a tight schedule. It may be more reliable even with traffic, since the F line will be packed.
- Muni buses along Columbus Avenue can sometimes be faster, but they also share the same downtown congestion issues.
- Walking part of the route (if feasible) or combining a short walk with the streetcar can reduce the stress of waiting for a crowded vehicle.
- Boarding Tips: Try to catch the streetcar a few blocks down from the most crowded stops (e.g., somewhere between Hyde and Mason) to increase your chance of getting a seat.
- Expect Delays: Even if you arrive early, leave buffer time because streetcars may be delayed due to crowd boarding or rerouting near parade routes or Fleet Week events.
In summary, while the F line is normally reliable and scenic, during Fleet Week it can be very crowded and slower than usual. If punctuality for your meeting is critical, using a ride-share or taxi is the safest option. If you prefer public transit, leave extra time and consider boarding at a less busy stop to improve your chances of a seat and timely arrival.
