Mobile phone usage

Travelling to usa for 3 weeks starting of in sanfrancisco just wondered what the best way to use a mobile as data etc won't be included in my current package (tesco on 02)is it possible to by a sim card .

Yes, it is definitely possible to use your mobile phone in the U.S. for data, calls, and texts, but since your current Tesco O2 plan from the UK does not include U.S. roaming, you’ll need a local solution. Buying a U.S. SIM card is one of the easiest and most cost-effective options for a three-week trip.

Here are your main options:

  • Buy a prepaid U.S. SIM card: Major carriers such as T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon sell prepaid SIM cards that include data, calls, and texts. You can purchase them at carrier stores, electronics stores like Best Buy, or even some supermarkets. Most offer plans that range from 10GB up to unlimited data for 30 days.
  • Mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs): Companies like Mint Mobile, Visible, or Straight Talk offer prepaid SIMs and sometimes cheaper data packages. You can often buy online and have them shipped to your hotel or Airbnb in San Francisco.
  • International SIM cards or eSIMs: If your phone is unlocked and supports eSIMs, you could buy an international travel SIM before leaving the UK, which works in the U.S. Some providers even allow you to top up data online. This avoids physically swapping SIM cards but may be more expensive than a local SIM.

Additional tips:

  • Ensure your phone is unlocked before traveling, as locked phones cannot use U.S. SIM cards.
  • Check that your phone supports the network frequencies used by the carrier you choose.
  • Prepaid SIMs are ideal for short-term trips as there are no contracts, and you can choose a plan that matches your expected data usage.
  • Keep your Tesco SIM safe in case you want to switch back once you return to the UK.

In summary, buying a local prepaid SIM card upon arrival in San Francisco or using a travel eSIM is the most straightforward and affordable way to stay connected for three weeks in the U.S.
