Yosemite trip in June
Planning a week in June. Looking to stay in the fish camp area. Are most of the major attractions accessible from this area? I also thought of splitting the trip between Yosemite and sequoia national park.
Fish Camp is a small community located just outside the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park. Staying there in June can be very convenient, particularly if you want easy access to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, as well as other southern and central parts of the park.
Accessibility to major attractions from Fish Camp:
- Mariposa Grove: Extremely close — just a short drive or shuttle ride into the grove, which is home to hundreds of giant sequoias including the Grizzly Giant and California Tunnel Tree. The grove has accessible trails and shuttle services during peak season, including June.
- Yosemite Valley: About a 1–1.5 hour drive from Fish Camp. Most iconic Yosemite landmarks, such as Yosemite Falls, El Capitan, Half Dome viewpoints, and Bridalveil Fall, are located in Yosemite Valley. You can spend a day or two exploring these areas, but note that driving and parking can take extra time in June, which is peak season.
- Glacier Point: Approximately a 1.5–2 hour drive from Fish Camp. Offers breathtaking panoramic views of Half Dome, Yosemite Valley, and the High Sierra. The road is generally open in June, though early June can still have some closures due to snow in previous years.
- Wawona area and Pioneer History Museum: Very close to Fish Camp, including the Wawona Hotel and historic sites. Provides a quieter side of the park if you want less crowded experiences.
Considerations for splitting time with Sequoia National Park:
- Sequoia National Park is roughly 3–4 hours southeast of Yosemite’s southern entrance. If you plan to split your week, 2–3 days in Yosemite and 2–3 days in Sequoia is feasible, but consider travel time and how much you want to explore in each park.
- Major attractions in Sequoia include the Giant Forest (home to the General Sherman Tree), Moro Rock, and Crescent Meadow. Roads and trails are usually fully open in June, and weather is generally pleasant.
- Booking accommodations early in both areas is strongly recommended, especially for June, which is a peak travel season. Lodges inside the parks or nearby towns like Three Rivers (for Sequoia) and Fish Camp (for Yosemite) are your best options.
Additional tips:
- Start your days early in Yosemite to beat crowds, especially if traveling from Fish Camp to the Valley.
- Use park shuttles where possible in Yosemite Valley to avoid parking stress.
- Consider scenic drives such as Tioga Road or the Glacier Point Road if open, but note that Tioga Pass may still have snow in early June in some years.
- Pack layers — mornings and evenings can be cool even in June, especially near higher elevations.
In summary, Fish Camp is a great base if you want easy access to Mariposa Grove and southern Yosemite, with manageable drives to other iconic locations in the park. Splitting your trip with Sequoia is doable but plan for travel time and book accommodations early.
