mariposa area or Oakhurst area

Hi people, we would appreciate your help. Our plan is to sleep in the mariposa area or Oakhurst area. The prices are cheaper than inside the park or in El Portal. We are in a dilemma if it is worth the money we will save. We have 2 nights and the plan is to do the Mariposa Grove area one day and the Yosemite Valley area the second day.

First question - I saw that we would drive for example from Mariposa an hour and a half to Yosemite Valley. Is it reasonable to sleep there?

I would love to hear from people who have sleep in this area and help with how they arranged their route (we are not going to climb the mountains)

Staying in either Mariposa or Oakhurst can be a good option if you are looking to save money, though there are some trade-offs compared to lodging inside the park or in El Portal. Both towns are about an hour to an hour and a half from Yosemite Valley, depending on traffic, which is reasonable for a day trip but does mean an early start and a potentially longer evening drive back.

Here are some points to consider for each area:

  • Mariposa: This town is charming with historic downtown streets, local restaurants, and easy access to the south entrance of Yosemite, including Mariposa Grove. It’s a bit farther from Yosemite Valley (roughly 1.5 hours), so plan to start early if you want to spend a full day in the valley.
  • Oakhurst: Slightly closer to the park’s south entrance and Mariposa Grove, often around 1 hour to the valley. It has a range of accommodations and restaurants and can be a convenient base for exploring both Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley over two days.

Practical tips for your itinerary:

  • Plan to drive early in the morning to maximize your time in Yosemite Valley or Mariposa Grove, especially during summer when the park is busy.
  • For Mariposa Grove, arriving early avoids the largest crowds and helps with parking at the trailhead shuttle.
  • In Yosemite Valley, consider using the free park shuttle to move between trailheads and viewpoints, as parking inside the valley can be limited and busy.
  • Evening drives back to your lodging may take longer than expected due to traffic exiting the park, so factor in extra time to avoid stress.

Overall, staying in Mariposa or Oakhurst is a reasonable and cost-effective choice if you are comfortable with daily drives of 1–1.5 hours. You can comfortably visit Mariposa Grove one day and Yosemite Valley the next, enjoying the scenery without climbing mountains. Just be sure to start your days early and have a plan for parking and shuttles inside the park.
