Flagstaff/Sedona with kids

We are a full time travel family of 7, kids ranging in age from 2-12. We are spending the month of March in Flagstaff. We want to take a day or two to go to Sedona. What are some things we can do in Sedona with littles? A lot of people recommend the Pink Jeep Tours, there are a couple that we can do wtih kids under 5. Would it be worth it? Any other suggestions for the area or even Flagstaff area?

Visiting Sedona with young children can be a lot of fun, as the area offers both scenic experiences and kid-friendly activities. Given that your kids range from 2–12, it’s best to focus on accessible trails, short excursions, and interactive experiences.

Pink Jeep Tours: These are very popular in Sedona, and several routes are suitable for families with small children. The tours provide an exciting way to see the red rock formations without requiring long hikes. For kids under 5, the “Broken Arrow” and “Coyote Canyon” tours are recommended as they are more family-friendly and allow for safe seating in the jeeps.

  • Pros: Exciting for kids, no strenuous activity, knowledgeable guides, excellent photo opportunities.
  • Cons: Can be pricey, may not be suitable for very young or motion-sensitive children on rougher trails.

Other kid-friendly activities in Sedona:

  • Bell Rock & Cathedral Rock Trails: Short hikes or easy walks around the base are manageable for little ones and provide iconic views.
  • Slide Rock State Park: Even if the water is cold in March, the park offers a fun place for kids to explore rock formations and streambeds. It’s a good place for a picnic or a short nature walk.
  • Chapel of the Holy Cross: Easy access by car, with short paths suitable for kids. The architecture and views make it interesting for the whole family.
  • Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Drive: A relaxing way to see the area without hiking. Pull over at viewpoints or small trails for family photos and short walks.
  • Local art galleries and shops: Many are family-friendly and can provide a break from outdoor activities.

Nearby Flagstaff activities suitable for families:

  • Lowell Observatory: Fun and educational for kids with interactive exhibits and telescope viewing.
  • Flagstaff Arboretum: Great for a short stroll with kids, exploring local plants and wildlife.
  • Arizona Snowbowl: Depending on snow conditions in March, kids can enjoy snow play or scenic chairlift rides.
  • Buffalo Park: Easy trails and open space for running around and seeing views of the San Francisco Peaks.

Tips for visiting Sedona and Flagstaff with children:

  • Start hikes and tours early in the day to avoid crowds and make the most of daylight.
  • Bring snacks, water, and sun protection, even in March, as the desert sun can be strong.
  • Check tour requirements for car seats or booster seats for younger children on Pink Jeep Tours.

Overall, a Pink Jeep Tour is definitely worth it with kids under 5 as long as you choose a family-friendly route. Combining a tour with short hikes, scenic drives, and kid-focused stops will make for a fun, memorable day in Sedona while accommodating all ages.
