Car in Juneau?
I'll be with a group of 12 on a cruise and have a full day in Juneau. We plan to explore the glacier area and do some light hiking around the Mendanhall Visitor center, ride the skytram (if it isn't too cloudy) and walk and eat in town. Should we rent 2 minivans to get around - seems like a more cost effective option vs city buses and taxis. How is the parking at the glacier int he morning and in town?
For a group of 12 visiting Juneau for a full day, renting two minivans can indeed be a practical and cost-effective choice compared with using city buses or taxis, especially if you want flexibility to explore multiple locations like Mendenhall Glacier, take light hikes, ride the Mount Roberts Tramway, and spend time in town for meals and shopping.
Here are some considerations for renting minivans in Juneau:
- Parking at Mendenhall Glacier: The main visitor center has a reasonably sized parking lot, but it can fill up quickly in the morning, especially during peak tourist season. Arriving early, around 8:30–9:00 AM, can help secure spaces without stress. There is additional parking along the nearby trails, but spots closer to the visitor center and main viewpoints are limited.
- Parking in town: Juneau has metered street parking and public lots. While parking is available, spaces can be tight near popular downtown restaurants and attractions. It’s best to plan for some walking from parking spots to your destinations.
- Advantages of minivans: You have the freedom to adjust your schedule, stop for photos, and move between locations without waiting for public transport. It’s especially convenient for a group that size, since splitting into two vehicles avoids the hassle of coordinating multiple taxis.
- Alternatives: Some visitors use guided shuttle tours, which handle parking and logistics, but these are less flexible for spontaneous stops or dining at specific downtown restaurants.
Tips for your day:
- Leave the cruise ship dock early to maximize time at the glacier and avoid morning congestion.
- Consider packing a small cooler or snacks for the drive between locations to save time.
- Check the weather forecast—if the skytram views might be obscured by clouds, have a backup plan for town activities or additional hiking.
Overall, renting two minivans gives your group independence and flexibility, making it a very suitable option for a full day in Juneau, especially if parking logistics are managed with an early start and awareness of peak times.
