Hiking close to town?
We have a port stop from 2-10pm. We have done the Mendenhall Glacier the last couple of years on public transportation. Trying to find something to do on our own for 3-4 hours. Not interested in more shopping!
With a 2-10pm port stop in Juneau and previous visits to Mendenhall Glacier, you have a few excellent options for hiking or exploring close to town without needing a car. Since you want to spend 3-4 hours on your own and avoid shopping, here are some ideas:
Nearby hikes and nature walks:
- Mount Roberts Tramway & Trails: Take the tram up Mount Roberts for incredible views of Juneau and Gastineau Channel. From the top, there are several easy to moderate trails (like the Rock Garden Trail) that can occupy 1-2 hours, with boardwalks and scenic overlooks. This is very accessible from the cruise terminal.
- Perseverance Trail: A moderate trail starting near the tram base that follows old mining roads. You can do a partial hike to enjoy waterfalls, old mining ruins, and forest scenery without committing to the full 4-5 mile trek.
- Thane Road Trails: About a 5-minute drive or Uber from downtown, this area has several short, scenic trails along the water and through forested areas. Good for an easy 1-2 hour walk with minimal elevation gain.
Other non-hiking outdoor options:
- Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure: A half-day guided tour with trails, gardens, and panoramic views of Juneau. You can explore on your own if you just stick to the walking paths.
- West Glacier Trail / Salmon Creek: A quiet, scenic spot to stretch your legs and enjoy riverside views. Ideal for an hour or so of walking.
- Pack a picnic along the waterfront: Juneau has beautiful public areas along the Gastineau Channel, including benches and boardwalks, where you can enjoy the scenery if you prefer minimal walking.
Tips:
- Check ferry or tram schedules if using Mount Roberts Tramway to ensure you have enough time to hike and return to the ship.
- Wear layered clothing as coastal weather can change quickly, and bring waterproof shoes if trails are damp.
- Uber or local taxis are reliable for short distances, saving time so you can maximize your hike and sightseeing window.
With these options, you can enjoy 3-4 hours of outdoor exploration, get some great views, and return to your ship without feeling rushed.
