Visiting from the UK in April

We’re visiting from the Uk in April we are planning to rent a car and drive from Napa to Lake Tahoe stay there overnight then travel onto Yosemite and stay there for probably 2 nights.

Any advice at all would be appreciated particularly about the journey but also anything else you feel would be helpful.

Many thanks!

Your planned route from Napa to Lake Tahoe and then Yosemite in April can be a wonderful mix of scenic drives and outdoor adventure, but there are some important considerations to keep in mind for a smooth trip.

Driving from Napa to Lake Tahoe:

  • The drive from Napa to South Lake Tahoe is approximately 3.5–4.5 hours depending on traffic and weather.
  • In April, snow is still possible at higher elevations, especially around the Sierra Nevada, so check road conditions before you go. Some routes may require snow chains.
  • Consider stopping briefly in Sacramento or the Sacramento Delta for a break and to refuel, both your car and yourself.

Overnight stay in Lake Tahoe:

  • South Lake Tahoe has a range of hotels, motels, and lodges. Book early, as weekends can be busy even in spring.
  • Check if the hotel offers parking and whether snow chains are needed for your vehicle overnight.
  • If you enjoy a short scenic activity, consider a walk along Lake Tahoe’s shoreline or a brief hike if trails are accessible.

Driving from Lake Tahoe to Yosemite:

  • The drive is about 4–5 hours, but can vary depending on snow closures. April is early season for Yosemite, so some higher elevation roads (like Tioga Pass) may still be closed due to snow. Check the National Park Service website for updates.
  • Consider entering Yosemite from the Big Oak Flat or Arch Rock entrances depending on your location and the closures.
  • Pack snacks, water, and fuel as services can be limited in remote areas.

Staying in Yosemite:

  • Book accommodation as early as possible; options include lodges inside the park or nearby towns like Mariposa, Groveland, or Oakhurst.
  • Expect chilly nights in April; bring warm clothing even if the days are mild.
  • Popular easy-to-medium hikes include Yosemite Valley Loop, Lower Yosemite Fall Trail, and Mirror Lake. These can give you great views without strenuous effort.
  • Check for shuttle schedules within the park if you prefer not to drive inside Yosemite Valley.

Additional tips:

  • Ensure your rental car has GPS or use a reliable mapping app, as cell service is spotty in the mountains.
  • Start drives early in the morning to maximize daylight and reduce traffic stress.
  • Carry a paper map as a backup in case GPS fails.
  • Check weather forecasts daily to adjust your itinerary and drive safely through potential snow or rain.

With careful planning and flexibility for weather conditions, this itinerary can offer an unforgettable California road trip experience combining wine country, alpine scenery, and iconic national parks.
