Places of Interest on Road Trip

I ma planning a trip in September starting in San Francisco for 4 nights then driving to Los Angeles for 4 nights then into Las Vegas for 4 nights. Any recommendations on where to stay for 2-3 nights en route from SF to LA? Was thinking of 2 nights in Monterey and 1 night in Santa Barbara?

Your plan to break up the drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles with stops in Monterey and Santa Barbara is very reasonable and allows you to enjoy some of California’s most scenic spots along the way without feeling rushed.

Monterey is an excellent choice for a 2-night stay. It gives you time to explore the coast, see the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, drive the 17-Mile Drive, and even make a short trip down to Carmel-by-the-Sea. Staying two nights ensures you’re not pressed for time and can enjoy the coastal scenery at a relaxed pace.

  • Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa: Excellent ocean views and central location near Cannery Row.
  • Portola Hotel & Spa: Good family-friendly amenities and walkable to shops and restaurants.
  • Casa Munras Garden Hotel & Spa: Comfortable boutique hotel with convenient location.

Santa Barbara is a logical choice for a 1-night stay, especially if you want to break up the drive before reaching Los Angeles. The city offers beautiful beaches, a charming downtown area, and excellent restaurants. One night is enough to see the main sights and have a relaxing dinner or sunset stroll along the waterfront.

  • Spanish Garden Inn: Cozy boutique hotel near State Street and the waterfront.
  • Harbor View Inn: Simple, comfortable, with great views of the harbor.
  • Kimpton Canary Hotel: Stylish, centrally located, and ideal for exploring downtown on foot.

Additional options en route could include stopping in Pismo Beach, Cambria, or Paso Robles if you want more wine country experiences or coastal charm. But your current plan—2 nights in Monterey and 1 in Santa Barbara—offers a balanced pace and scenic route along Highway 1 and US-101, with plenty of opportunities for sightseeing and relaxing stops along the way.
