Trip suggestion with baby

We are planning a 9 days trip to Alaska at the end of June. We will be flying in and out of Anchorage. My baby will be exactly one year old by then. We are debating on whether we should go to Denali National park or stay on Kenai Peninsula. If we stay on the Peninsula, I'm thinking of visiting Seward, Homer and Kenai. Don't think I can squeeze both in within 9 days with a toddler. Also what toddler friendly activities do you recommend?

For a 9-day trip to Alaska with a one-year-old, focusing on either Denali or the Kenai Peninsula is a wise decision. Trying to do both can make your schedule hectic, and long drives may be difficult with a toddler. Each option offers unique experiences, but the Kenai Peninsula is generally more toddler-friendly due to shorter drives, easier access to activities, and more opportunities for gentle outdoor exploration.

Option 1: Kenai Peninsula Base

Staying on the Peninsula allows you to explore Seward, Homer, and Kenai at a relaxed pace, with opportunities for wildlife viewing, scenic drives, and easy walks suitable for a toddler.

  • Seward: Visit the Alaska SeaLife Center to see marine animals up close. A short walk along the waterfront or a gentle hike like Exit Glacier Trail (paved portion) is doable with a stroller.
  • Homer: Explore the Homer Spit, which has flat walking areas and restaurants. Consider a short harbor boat tour that accommodates young children.
  • Kenai: Drive the Kenai River area for wildlife viewing. Many short boardwalks and picnic spots are suitable for toddlers.
  • Optional mild excursions: Short glacier viewing tours from Kenai Fjords National Park cruises—choose a half-day cruise for less time on the water.

Option 2: Denali National Park

Denali is stunning, but longer travel times from Anchorage (4–5 hours each way) can be tiring with a baby. Lodging within or near the park allows easier access to wildlife and scenery. Shuttle buses in the park can be long rides for a toddler, though they offer excellent views.

  • Consider the park’s bus tours that are shorter (e.g., 4–5 hours) rather than full-day Tundra Wilderness tours.
  • Easy walks around the visitor center and nearby boardwalks are toddler-friendly.
  • Accommodation near Healy or Denali Park Village is convenient to minimize driving.

Toddler-friendly tips:

  • Bring a lightweight stroller for boardwalks and paved trails.
  • Plan for frequent breaks and carry snacks and water.
  • Choose lodging with kitchens or kitchenettes for flexible meal preparation.
  • Opt for short boat tours, easy trails, and wildlife viewing areas accessible by car to reduce stress on the toddler.
  • Pack layers for variable weather—Alaska can be chilly and rainy even in late June.

Suggested approach: For 9 days with a one-year-old, focusing on the Kenai Peninsula is likely the most manageable and enjoyable. You can base yourself in Seward for a few nights, drive to Homer for 2–3 nights, and explore Kenai and Soldotna areas for the remaining days. This plan avoids long drives, allows flexible pacing, and offers many toddler-friendly activities.

Denali could be a separate trip when the child is older and can tolerate longer bus rides and hikes. This way, you can maximize enjoyment without overextending travel with a baby.
