Location for 1 night with easy access to HKIA

I have a flight n a Sunday evening 11 pm. I plan to come into HK from Shenzhen Saturday afternoon.

That means I have Saturday evening and most of Sunday to sightsee and walk around. Around 9PM I’d make my way to the airport.

What area do you recommend I stay for easy access to HKIA?

I haven’t been to HK in 20 years. IN the past I always stayed Kowloon-side but that might not be practical for HKIA?

Any suggestions?

Once I know why area to target I will look for a hotel in that neighborhood.

Thanks!!

For a short overnight stay in Hong Kong with easy access to HKIA, your priority should be minimizing travel time to the airport while still having the ability to explore some of the city on Saturday evening and Sunday. Hong Kong’s Airport Express train makes this very convenient from certain areas.

Here are some recommended areas to stay:

  • Hong Kong Island – Kowloon-side near Tsim Sha Tsui or Central: Staying in Central, Sheung Wan, or Tsim Sha Tsui gives you access to restaurants, nightlife, and shopping. From Central, you can take the Airport Express from Hong Kong Station directly to the airport in about 24 minutes.
  • Hong Kong Station / Admiralty area: This area is ideal if your main goal is quick airport access. You can hop on the Airport Express to reach HKIA quickly while still being close to attractions like Victoria Harbour and IFC Mall.
  • Kowloon – Tsim Sha Tsui / Hung Hom: Slightly further from the Airport Express (you would connect via Kowloon Station), but convenient for sightseeing, shopping, and dining on the Kowloon side. Travel to the airport would be around 35–40 minutes.

Additional tips:

  • The Airport Express is the fastest and most convenient route to HKIA, with trains running every 10–12 minutes. If staying near a station, you can plan to leave the city around 9 PM comfortably for an 11 PM flight.
  • If you want to avoid public transport late at night, you can also consider hotels near Tung Chung, close to the airport, but this area has fewer dining and sightseeing options.
  • For maximizing sightseeing on Saturday evening and Sunday, Tsim Sha Tsui or Central is preferable. You can walk along the harbour, enjoy dinner, and explore local markets.

In summary, staying near Central or Tsim Sha Tsui gives a good balance of sightseeing and fast access to HKIA via the Airport Express. If your priority is purely minimizing airport travel, Tung Chung or Lantau hotels are convenient but less lively.
