Hotel near Hong Kong Station?
Wondering whether to stay at a cheapish hotel (such as Butterfly on Wellington or Butterfly on LKF ) which are both close to the airport express terminus station and the Metro and the ferry piers . What's the area like around the hotels? Upscale? business area etc? Cheap places to eat?
Also getting the Express train from the airport to Hong Kong Station: is it worth changing onto the metro line at Tsing YI then to Hong Kong Station?
Locale and transport recommendations welcome.
Staying near Hong Kong Station, such as at Butterfly on Wellington or Butterfly on LKF, is a practical choice for transit and exploring Central Hong Kong. Both hotels are located within walking distance of the Airport Express terminus at Hong Kong Station, the MTR (metro) system, and the Star Ferry piers. This makes them convenient for arriving from the airport, traveling across the city, or heading to Kowloon.
The areas around these hotels differ slightly:
- Butterfly on Wellington: Located in the Sheung Wan / Central fringe. The area is a mix of older commercial buildings and modern developments. It's not overly upscale like Central proper, but has a professional feel with some business offices and boutique shops nearby. Plenty of casual eateries, local cafes, and dim sum restaurants are available for budget-friendly meals.
- Butterfly on LKF: Situated in Lan Kwai Fong, the nightlife hub of Hong Kong. The area is lively in the evenings with bars, restaurants, and entertainment. During the day, it’s quieter but still more energetic compared to Sheung Wan. Food options are more varied and international, though slightly pricier than in quieter areas.
For budget-friendly dining:
- Sheung Wan streets have traditional cha chaan teng (Hong Kong-style cafes) serving affordable breakfast, lunch, and noodles.
- Central and LKF also have small local eateries tucked into side streets that offer inexpensive meals.
- Star Ferry piers area has some cheap local options as well.
Regarding transport from the airport:
- The Airport Express from Hong Kong International Airport goes directly to Hong Kong Station in about 24 minutes. There is generally no need to change at Tsing Yi unless you are heading to a specific stop en route for other purposes. Direct Airport Express to Hong Kong Station is faster and simpler.
- From Hong Kong Station, you can easily access the MTR network (Island Line at Hong Kong Station / Central Station interchange) to reach destinations like Causeway Bay, Admiralty, or other districts.
- Star Ferry to Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon is a short walk from the hotels and offers a scenic, affordable cross-harbor connection.
In summary, both Butterfly hotels offer excellent convenience for transit and sightseeing. Butterfly on Wellington is quieter and more budget-friendly, while Butterfly on LKF puts you in the heart of Hong Kong’s nightlife. Airport Express direct to Hong Kong Station is the recommended method; no need for an extra transfer at Tsing Yi.
