Reason for age limit for bamboo rafting

Hi there

I will be exactly 70 years old on the day we go bamboo rafting at the end of March. I am healthy but have mild osteoporosis. I read that if I ask the hotel to book for me then I might avoid the wharf examination of passport. I don't know if it is true.

Is it because the river can be bumpy in parts or can be dangerous. I read that we will wear a lifejacket but it might not be securely fit. I can't swim. Please let me know your opinions. Thanks.

The age limit for bamboo rafting in Yangshuo is generally set for safety reasons. The Li River, while scenic and calm in many stretches, can have some sections with mild rapids or uneven water flow that may pose a risk, especially for older travelers or those with health conditions like osteoporosis. Operators want to minimize the risk of falls, injuries, or other accidents during boarding, disembarking, or if the raft encounters slightly rough patches.

Lifejackets are provided, but as you noted, they may not always fit perfectly, especially if you have a larger frame or mobility limitations. Being unable to swim increases the risk factor, which is why some operators set an age limit around 65–70, and they may ask for proof of age or check passports at the wharf.

Regarding booking through a hotel to potentially avoid the wharf examination, this is not a guaranteed method. Some operators may skip passport checks for pre-arranged hotel bookings, but this is informal and varies by operator. Safety protocols, including age or health restrictions, may still be enforced regardless of booking method.

Here are some practical suggestions:

  • Consult your hotel or rafting operator in advance about the age limit and your health conditions.
  • Request a well-fitted lifejacket and consider bringing extra padding for comfort and support.
  • If you are concerned about falls, you might consider a shorter or calmer section of the river, or even a private boat tour with minimal movement.
  • Ensure someone in your group is capable of assisting you during boarding and disembarking.

In summary, the age limit is mainly for safety due to possible bumps, river currents, and the physical demands of rafting. With mild osteoporosis and no swimming ability, caution is recommended, but if you are healthy and take proper precautions, you may still be able to enjoy the experience with the right arrangements.
