Fantasy Fest 2025

Just came from another awesome Mardi Gras trip and looking for some more party action.

I've always wanted to go to Fantasy Fest but never got the opportunity to go but I might put in a little more effort to get my boss to let me get there despite my vaca hours getting used up.

In the meantime, I'm looking into some info and tips for this year's FF.

1. The theme is Bedtime Stories and Magical Monsters. Can anyone elaborate on that so I know what costume ideas I can cook up.

2. The bars and the streets are where I want to be but are there any parties that are worth looking into?

3. I'll wind up staying a bit off site from Duval St. Fantasy Zone. Are there any changing spots that can be used in the Zone?

4. I have some beads leftover from Mardi Gras. Should I bring them along or just a enthusiastic, energetic yet polite attitude be more than enough?

Fantasy Fest in Key West is one of the most colorful, energetic, and eccentric celebrations in the U.S., typically held in late October. For 2025, the theme is “Bedtime Stories and Magical Monsters,” which opens up a wide range of creative costume possibilities.

1. Costume Ideas

The theme encourages playful, imaginative outfits inspired by storybooks, fairy tales, mythical creatures, and fantastical monsters. Think along the lines of:

  • Classic bedtime story characters with a twist—e.g., Little Red Riding Hood as a mischievous version or a grown-up Alice in Wonderland interpretation.
  • Magical creatures—dragons, fairies, goblins, or whimsical monsters.
  • Hybrid costumes—combining storybook characters with spooky or magical monster elements.
  • Accessories like wings, glitter, masks, or creatively painted body art are highly encouraged.

The key is to be bold, colorful, and playful—Key West thrives on creativity and humor during Fantasy Fest.

2. Bars, Streets, and Parties

Duval Street is the epicenter of street festivities, bars, and live music. While wandering the streets is a major part of the experience, several organized events and parties are well worth considering:

  • Costume contests and parades (including the famous Fantasy Fest parade) – these are central to the festival vibe and offer great photo opportunities.
  • Theme parties at local venues – many bars and hotels host ticketed themed parties matching this year’s “Bedtime Stories and Magical Monsters” concept.
  • Street performances and live music – Duval Street is lined with bars featuring live bands, DJs, and performers; hopping between these is part of the fun.

Advance planning for popular parties is recommended as tickets can sell out quickly.

3. Changing Spots in Fantasy Zone

If you’re staying off-site, there are a few options for changing within or near the Fantasy Zone:

  • Hotels and Airbnb properties near Duval Street may allow guests to change before heading into the festivities; check with your host.
  • Some public restrooms and designated “Costume Changing Stations” are set up during the festival, especially near major events and parades.
  • Portable changing tents or rented spaces (sometimes offered by costume shops or festival organizers) can be reserved ahead of time for convenience.

4. Beads and Attitude

While bringing beads from Mardi Gras can be fun, the Key West crowd thrives on enthusiasm, energy, and creativity. Beads are not required—you’ll fit right in with a playful costume, a positive attitude, and a willingness to interact with fellow festival-goers. Participating respectfully in street activities and parades is more important than bringing physical props.

Overall, for a successful Fantasy Fest experience, focus on bold, imaginative costumes, plan which events and parties to attend, know your options for changing, and bring plenty of enthusiasm. The streets, bars, and parades offer endless opportunities for fun, making it a memorable celebration regardless of whether you bring beads or not.
