Shenzhen
Hi
Our itinerary at the moment is
Bejing 4 Nights
Shanghai 4 nights (Disney 1 day)
Shenzhen 3 nights
Singapore 4 nights (Universal 1 day)
All of the above I am looking forward to, but…..
Is Shenzhen one to change for something different
Advice appreciated
Shenzhen is a modern, fast-growing city in southern China, known for its skyscrapers, shopping malls, tech industry, and theme parks. However, it is often considered more of a business hub than a traditional tourist destination. Whether to keep it in your itinerary depends on your interests and travel style.
Highlights of Shenzhen for tourists include:
- Window of the World: A theme park with miniature replicas of famous landmarks from around the world.
- Splendid China Folk Village: Cultural park showcasing China’s diverse ethnic groups and historic sites in miniature and life-size.
- OCT Loft: Creative arts district with galleries, cafes, and shops.
- Shopping: Luohu Commercial City, Huaqiangbei electronics market, and various modern malls.
- Coastal attractions: Dapeng Fortress and beaches, though they require travel outside the city center.
Things to consider:
- Compared to Beijing and Shanghai, Shenzhen is less “cultural” and more modern/entertainment-focused.
- If you are mainly interested in theme parks, shopping, and modern urban experiences, Shenzhen fits well.
- If you prefer historical and cultural sightseeing, you might consider replacing Shenzhen with cities like Guilin, Hangzhou, Xi’an, or Chengdu, which offer iconic natural scenery, ancient architecture, and unique cultural experiences.
Alternative options for the 3-night slot:
- Guilin/Yangshuo: Famous for karst landscapes, Li River cruises, and a more relaxed, scenic experience.
- Hangzhou: West Lake, tea plantations, and historic temples.
- Chengdu: Giant pandas, Sichuan cuisine, and nearby natural sights like Mount Emei.
In summary, Shenzhen is fine if you want a modern urban experience and entertainment, but for a more “classic” China experience with natural and cultural attractions, replacing it with Guilin, Hangzhou, or Chengdu may provide a more memorable experience.
