Grand Canyon to Sedona
We will be leaving a friend's house in Prescott and heading to the Grand Canyon. We have reservations for the Grand Canyon at Maswik. My plan is to start at the east entrance and get there for the sunset. After viewing sunrise and breakfast, we plan on heading to Sedona with stops at (staying at the Star for two nights) for 2 1/2 days before heading back to Prescott. We also have dinner reservations for our full day in Sedona. So here are questions for our road trip:
Any thing to see on our way to the GC from Prescott?
What should we stop to see on our way from the GC to Sedona? - really dont want to backtrack if I can avoid it.
What 2 early morning hikes are recommended?
Is there any stops from Sedona to Prescott?
Thank you all in advance. Trip Advisor has made many of my trips incredible.
Driving from Prescott to the Grand Canyon and then on to Sedona offers many scenic and interesting stops along the way, especially if you are looking to avoid backtracking. Since you’re staying at Maswik Lodge, starting at the east entrance and catching the sunset is a great plan, and seeing the sunrise from the rim the next morning will be spectacular.
On the way from Prescott to the Grand Canyon:
- Montezuma Castle National Monument: A short detour near Camp Verde, this cliff dwelling offers a glimpse into the Sinagua people’s history. It’s a quick stop but very scenic and historic.
- Red Rock Scenic Byway: If time allows, consider a short drive through the Verde Valley, which has beautiful red rock formations and small towns like Cottonwood and Jerome.
- Jerome: An old mining town turned arts community perched on a hillside. Good for a coffee or quick walk through galleries.
On the way from the Grand Canyon to Sedona:
- Oak Creek Canyon: A must-see scenic drive with pullouts for views, waterfalls, and photo opportunities. Slide Rock State Park is a fun spot if you want to stretch your legs.
- Cameron Trading Post: Near the east side of the Grand Canyon, this historic trading post is perfect for a snack, Native American crafts, and a quick leg stretch.
- Flagstaff Downtown: If you’re passing through, the historic downtown has coffee shops, local art, and a chance to break up the drive.
Recommended early morning hikes:
- Bright Angel Trail: Starting early from the Grand Canyon’s south rim, this trail offers incredible canyon views without being overly strenuous if you hike a short segment.
- Cathedral Rock Trail in Sedona: A shorter, steep hike that rewards with iconic red rock vistas. Early morning is best to avoid heat and crowds.
Stops from Sedona back to Prescott:
- Red Rock State Park: A short hike or walk through scenic red rock formations and educational exhibits.
- Cottonwood or Jerome: If you didn’t visit on the way up, both towns offer history, galleries, and quaint streets to explore.
- Dead Horse Ranch State Park: Near Cottonwood, good for a picnic or gentle stroll along the Verde River before heading back to Prescott.
With this route, you can maximize scenic views and interesting stops without unnecessary backtracking, balancing history, nature, and photography opportunities for your trip.
