Hiking

I am planning a hiking trip. I am a female from Asia. I don't mind if female friends come with me. I don't know much about AZ. Does anyone have any good hiking routes to recommend to me?

Hi! Arizona is full of incredible hiking opportunities ranging from desert landscapes to forested mountains. Since you mentioned being open to hiking with female friends and not knowing much about the area, I’ll provide a mix of beginner-friendly, scenic, and popular trails that are generally safe and well-traveled.

In and around Tucson:

  • Sabino Canyon Trail: A beautiful desert canyon with paved and unpaved trails, accessible via a shuttle, good for seeing saguaros and wildlife. Beginner-friendly sections are available.
  • Tanque Verde Falls: Moderate hike to a series of small waterfalls; can be done in a half-day. Best in spring or early summer before the heat becomes intense.
  • Ventana Canyon Trail: Steeper but very scenic, with mountain and city views. Suitable for those with some hiking experience.

In the Phoenix/Scottsdale area:

  • Papago Park / Hole-in-the-Rock: Short, easy, and scenic with unique red rock formations. Great for a quick hike or sunrise/sunset visit.
  • Piestewa Peak Summit Trail: A well-maintained trail with city views. Moderate difficulty but short, about 1–2 hours round trip.
  • Echo Canyon Trail at Camelback Mountain: Popular but challenging; steep sections. Good if you are looking for a more intense workout.

Outside of major cities (more adventurous trips):

  • Cathedral Rock Trail in Sedona: Short but steep; one of the most photographed landmarks. Stunning red rock views. Best done early in the morning to avoid crowds and heat.
  • West Fork Trail in Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona: Gentle, scenic, and shaded by trees; ideal for a relaxed day hike. Crossing small streams adds charm without much difficulty.
  • Grand Canyon Rim Trails: Easy and moderate options along the South Rim. If you just want views without strenuous hiking, stick to the Rim Trail between major viewpoints.

Safety tips for solo or small group hiking in Arizona:

  • Start early in the day to avoid extreme heat, especially in desert areas.
  • Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat.
  • Let someone know your planned route and estimated return time.
  • Stick to well-marked, popular trails when hiking alone or with a small group.
  • Check local trail conditions online before heading out, as some trails may close seasonally.

Arizona offers a wide variety of trails suitable for beginners to experienced hikers, with safe and scenic options that allow you to enjoy the unique desert and mountain landscapes. Consider pairing hikes with guided or small group tours if you prefer extra safety or company.
