Scenic Route from Estes Park to Aspen
Hi,
We will be enjoying the Colorado snow capped mountains in early June this year. Wondering what's the scenic route to travel from Estes Park (or Grand lake) to Aspen? (We will be sightseeing and hiking along trail ridge road the day prior)
Thank guys
Traveling from Estes Park or Grand Lake to Aspen in early June offers some of Colorado’s most spectacular mountain scenery. Since you’re planning to enjoy Trail Ridge Road the day prior, you’ll already have experienced some of the high alpine vistas in Rocky Mountain National Park, so you can take a route that combines scenic byways, charming towns, and opportunities for hiking or short stops.
Option 1: Scenic Mountain & Byway Route (Recommended)
This route prioritizes scenic views and picturesque towns rather than speed. It takes you southwest through some classic Colorado landscapes:
- Start from Estes Park and head west on US-34/Trail Ridge Road to Grand Lake (if you’re not starting there).
- From Grand Lake, take US-40 west through Kremmling and Hot Sulphur Springs.
- Continue on US-40 to I-70 west toward Glenwood Springs. This portion passes through the stunning Colorado River canyon and Glenwood Canyon, which has beautiful views and pull-offs for photos.
- From Glenwood Springs, head south on CO-82 toward Aspen. This road climbs over Independence Pass (elevation 12,095 ft), which is one of the most scenic high mountain passes in Colorado. Note that Independence Pass is usually open by early June, but you should check the current road status before traveling.
Option 2: Faster Scenic Route via I-70
If you prefer a slightly faster route while still enjoying beautiful scenery, you can minimize mountain driving while still taking in some views:
- Estes Park → US-34/Trail Ridge Road to Grand Lake.
- From Grand Lake, take US-40 west toward Kremmling, then merge onto I-70 west.
- Follow I-70 through Vail to Glenwood Springs.
- From Glenwood Springs, take CO-82 south to Aspen. This avoids Independence Pass but still offers mountain vistas along CO-82 and around Glenwood Canyon.
Things to Note:
- Independence Pass is very scenic but narrow and winding. Since your driver prefers sightseeing over high-stress driving, ensure comfort with elevation and curves. Weather can still bring snow or chilly conditions in early June.
- Allow time for short hikes or photo stops along the way. Maroon Bells near Aspen is a must-see if time allows, though parking may require an early arrival or shuttle reservation.
- Both routes offer opportunities to stop in small mountain towns like Vail, Minturn, or Leadville for meals, coffee, or brief exploration.
- Total driving time is roughly 7–9 hours depending on stops and chosen route. Spreading the trip over a full day with sightseeing and hikes makes it more enjoyable.
In summary, for maximum scenic impact, take the route through Glenwood Springs and Independence Pass. For slightly easier driving with still excellent views, stick to I-70 west and CO-82 south. Both routes allow for memorable mountain vistas, charming small towns, and enjoyable hiking stops along the way.
