Help needed Fairmont vs Jay Autograh vs Palace

Hi I’ve recently found some deal for staying at the fairmont San Fran however for the same price I can be at the newer Jay autograph and for 300$ less I can be at the Palace (although the Palace reviews seem to mention the homeless surrounding the area a lot). The other two have no mention of these problems and say the area is safe. I currently have the Galleria Hotel reserved but it doesn’t look as nice as these others that now have deals on them.

I’m travelling with 2 kids 12 and 14 and 2 adults. The kids don’t mind walking but to an extent. Up the hill will be a battle but aren’t there cable cars?

Choosing between the Fairmont, the Jay Autograph, and the Palace Hotel in San Francisco depends on several factors including location, amenities, overall experience, and your tolerance for walking hills with kids. All three hotels have their merits, but each offers a slightly different experience.

The Fairmont San Francisco is a historic luxury hotel located atop Nob Hill, offering classic elegance, panoramic city views, and renowned service. Its location means you’ll be on a hill, but cable cars run nearby, which can ease transportation for your family. The Fairmont is generally considered very safe and family-friendly, and it offers amenities like a pool, multiple dining options, and spacious rooms.

The Jay Autograph Collection is newer and more modern, with contemporary design and amenities. It is slightly lower on the hill compared to the Fairmont, which may make walking with kids easier. It also tends to receive good reviews for service and comfort. Being a newer property, it may feel fresher and more updated than the Fairmont, though it might not have the same historic charm. The area is considered safe, and the hotel has convenient access to downtown attractions.

The Palace Hotel is a historic hotel with grand architecture and a luxurious interior, but it is located closer to Market Street, which can have higher foot traffic and areas where homelessness is more visible. While the hotel itself is safe and secure, some reviews mention that the surrounding streets can feel less comfortable, especially with kids. The Palace offers a beautiful atrium, refined dining, and a classic San Francisco experience, but the environment outside may influence your decision.

Other practical considerations:

  • San Francisco hills: Cable cars, rideshares, and buses can help navigate the hills if walking with kids is a concern. The Fairmont and Jay Autograph are both on hills but accessible via public transit or short rides.
  • Family amenities: Pools, breakfast options, and kid-friendly services can make your stay smoother. Check each hotel’s offerings in advance.
  • Budget vs experience: The Palace is cheaper, but you may trade off convenience and the feeling of safety in the immediate area. The Fairmont and Jay Autograph offer more security and a polished hotel environment.

Given your situation with two kids, safety and convenience might make the Fairmont or Jay Autograph a better choice. If you prefer historic charm and classic luxury, the Fairmont is ideal, though it is on a steeper hill. If you want a modern, fresh hotel experience with easier access and similar safety, the Jay Autograph is an excellent choice. The Palace can be a consideration if you prioritize cost and historic style, but you’ll need to be aware of the surrounding area.
