Chinatown to Levi Stadium Options

I’m going to my first NFL game soon!

Flying into OAK (cause it’s free), staying near Chinatown (nearly free) and wondering about the best way to get to Levi Stadium without a car.

I think BART can get us to and from OAK but how difficult will it be for the trip to and from the stadium?

Getting from San Francisco’s Chinatown to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara without a car is doable, but it requires some planning and a combination of public transit options. Levi’s Stadium is not directly on a BART line, so you’ll need to use a mix of BART and either Caltrain or shuttle services on game day.

Here’s a breakdown of your options:

  • BART + VTA Light Rail/Bus: You can take BART from Chinatown (near the Montgomery or Powell stations) south to either the Milpitas or Mountain View stations and then transfer to a VTA light rail or bus that goes toward the stadium. This can take around 2–2.5 hours depending on timing and transfers, and it may involve a bit of walking.
  • BART + Caltrain + Shuttle: Take BART from Chinatown to the Millbrae station. From there, transfer to Caltrain southbound toward San Jose Diridon Station. On NFL game days, there are special Caltrain “stadium trains” that stop at Great America Station, which is very close to Levi’s Stadium. This is often the easiest public transit method, though train tickets for game-day trains sometimes sell out, so you need to plan ahead.
  • Direct Shuttle from San Francisco: Some private companies and the stadium itself offer game-day shuttles from downtown San Francisco hotels and BART stations. These are convenient and reduce transfers, though they are slightly more expensive than public transit.

Additional tips:

  • Plan your return trip carefully—after the game, trains and shuttles can be very crowded. Expect delays and allow extra time to get back to Chinatown.
  • Check Caltrain’s “Levi’s Stadium Express” schedule in advance; this is the most straightforward and game-friendly option.
  • If you’re carrying bags or souvenirs, make sure you know the stadium’s bag policies to avoid delays when boarding trains or shuttles.

Overall, the BART + Caltrain + Levi’s Stadium Express combination is generally considered the best public-transit route. It’s not as quick as driving, but it avoids parking hassles and lets you enjoy a stress-free trip to your first NFL game.
