Golden Gate Bridge
Can anyone tell me how to get to the bridge. I would like to take a bus over and walk back. Am staying around Union square. TIA
Getting from Union Square to the Golden Gate Bridge using public transportation is straightforward, and walking back is a great idea if you enjoy scenic views.
Here’s a step-by-step suggestion for your trip:
- Bus to the Bridge: From Union Square, you can take Muni bus 38R (Rooftop Express) or 30/30X outbound toward the Golden Gate Bridge. The 38R is faster and more direct to the bridge area. Get off at the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center stop.
- Alternative via Presidio: Take the Muni 28/28R or a combination of buses to the Presidio (Lincoln Blvd near the bridge). This area is closer to the south end of the bridge and allows you to start your walk from the Presidio side.
- Walking Back: You can walk back toward the city along the bridge and the scenic paths in the Presidio or Crissy Field area. If walking the entire bridge is too long, you can turn around midway and return via Crissy Field for a slightly shorter and very scenic route back to downtown via bus or rideshare.
- Timing: Walking the bridge end-to-end takes about 30–45 minutes one way. Factor in extra time for photos and stopping at viewpoints.
Additional tips:
- Wear comfortable shoes; the bridge sidewalks can be busy with pedestrians and cyclists.
- Check Muni schedules ahead of time, especially on weekends.
- Bring layers; the bridge is often windy and cooler than downtown San Francisco.
- Consider using a Clipper Card for convenient payment on all Muni buses.
This plan lets you enjoy the bridge without driving, take in beautiful views of the bay, and have flexibility to return to the city at your own pace.
