Visiting week of July 4th

Hey everyone! This will be my family's 4th year in a row to visit the island. This time we are coming 7/1 to 7/8. We're staying at Westin Nanea. I have a couple questions (but any other tips/advice is much appreciated)

1. We went to the Drums of the Pacific luau a few years ago and want to go again. Looks like there are seats available still. Should we look a different luau this time?

2. What is there to do on July 4th?

Visiting Maui during the week of July 4th is a fantastic time as the island is lively with summer activities, but it’s also one of the busier weeks, so planning ahead is key. Staying at the Westin Nanea puts you in Ka’anapali, which is convenient for many popular attractions, beaches, and luau options.

Regarding your first question about luaus: Drums of the Pacific at the Hyatt Regency Maui has been a popular choice for years, and if you enjoyed it previously, there’s nothing wrong with returning. However, if you’re looking for a new experience, there are several other highly recommended luaus on Maui, each with unique experiences, themes, or locations:

  • Old Lahaina Luau: Widely considered one of the most authentic cultural experiences on the island. Focuses heavily on Hawaiian music, hula, and storytelling. Early reservations are highly recommended.
  • Feast at Lele: Offers a more intimate, table-side dining experience with a multi-course Polynesian menu representing Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa, and New Zealand. Great for couples or smaller groups seeking a more upscale experience.
  • Myths of Maui Luau: Held at the Wailea Beach Resort, this is another family-friendly option that includes music, dancing, and a buffet dinner with ocean views.

For your second question about July 4th activities: Maui celebrates Independence Day with a mix of family-friendly events, beach gatherings, and fireworks. While some events vary by year, common activities include:

  • Fireworks Displays: Many resorts and beaches, especially around Ka’anapali and Lahaina, host fireworks in the evening. Some are viewable from public beaches for free.
  • Parades and Community Events: Some towns may hold small parades, live music, and festivals. Check local calendars closer to your visit for updated events.
  • Beach & Water Activities: Enjoy the ocean with snorkeling, paddleboarding, or a relaxing day on the sand. Ka’anapali and nearby beaches often have organized activities during the holiday week.
  • Resort Activities: The Westin Nanea and other resorts usually host special July 4th events like poolside parties, barbecues, or themed family activities.

Additional tips for your July visit:

  • Book any luaus, excursions, or special events well in advance, as July is peak summer season.
  • Consider starting beach or sightseeing activities early in the day to avoid crowds and midday heat.
  • Pack sunscreen, hats, and reef-safe sun protection, especially if you plan to snorkel or spend time on the water.
  • Check for local farmers’ markets or food trucks for fresh island food and unique treats.

Overall, if you loved Drums of the Pacific, returning is a safe bet, but trying a different luau like Old Lahaina Luau or Feast at Lele can offer a fresh cultural experience. July 4th celebrations provide a mix of fireworks, beach activities, and family-friendly events to enjoy the holiday in true Maui style.
