Road to Hana - Memorial Day?
Heading to Maui soon and Memorial day (5/26) would be our ideal day to travel the RTH. However with it being a holiday... will a lot of attractions be closed? Should we push it to Tuesday instead?
The Road to Hana (RTH) is a popular and scenic drive in Maui, and planning it on Memorial Day (5/26) does have some considerations. While the road itself and public parks remain open, some privately operated attractions, food stops, and small roadside stands may have limited hours or be closed for the holiday. Crowds are generally higher on holidays, so traffic and parking at key spots can be more challenging.
Considerations for traveling RTH on Memorial Day:
- Public sites like Twin Falls, Wailua Falls, Wai’anapanapa State Park (black sand beach), and Haleakalā streams are typically open, though parking may be tight.
- Private businesses like Hana Farms, roadside fruit stands, and small cafés may be closed or have limited hours.
- Expect heavier traffic on the road and at popular pullouts, as both locals and tourists often travel the RTH on holidays.
- Reservations at Hana restaurants or guided tours (if planned) may be necessary, as availability is limited on holidays.
Advantages of shifting to the following Tuesday:
- Fewer crowds on the road and at popular stops.
- Better parking availability at waterfalls, beaches, and trails.
- Private attractions and roadside stands are more likely to be open and fully staffed.
- Safer and more relaxed driving experience, allowing more time to enjoy hikes and scenic stops.
Additional Tips:
- Start early in the morning to maximize daylight and minimize traffic stress.
- Pack snacks, water, and essentials in case food stops are closed or crowded.
- Check specific attraction websites or social media closer to your travel date for holiday hours.
Overall, while you *can* do the RTH on Memorial Day, for a more relaxed experience with fewer closures and crowds, moving it to the following Tuesday is likely the better choice.
