Things to do by Waihee Ridge trail

Arriving in early June and would love to do the Waihee Ridge trail with my 20 year old son. Husband has knee issues so he and my 16 year old son will likely opt-out. What are some things they can do nearby while waiting the 2-3 hours for us to finish the hike? We are staying in a condo in Kihei and will have a rental car.

It doesn't look like there is an east-west road from the area of the Waihee Ridge trail to Kaanapali/Kapalua, correct? So they would need to drive back down south and then west around the coast. I don't think they would have enough time to do that in 3 hours.

The Waihee Ridge Trail is a fantastic hike with lush valley views and panoramic coastal scenery, but you’re correct that there isn’t a direct east-west route to Kaanapali/Kapalua from Waihee—so your husband and younger son will want to stay nearby while you complete the 2-3 hour hike.

Here are some nearby activities and options for them:

  • Beach Time at Nearby West Maui Beaches – The closest beaches include Waihee Beach Park or Kanaha Beach Park. Kanaha is a bit further north near Kahului and is excellent for a casual stroll, picnicking, or relaxing by the water. Note that Waihee Beach can have strong currents, so they may prefer just walking and relaxing.
  • Explore Historic Wailuku Town – About 15 minutes south from the trailhead, Wailuku has a small historic downtown with boutique shops, coffee spots, and galleries. They can stroll Main Street, enjoy a coffee, or sample local treats.
  • Iao Valley State Monument – Only 10–15 minutes from the Waihee trailhead, Iao Valley is an easy drive with short walks to scenic viewpoints and the iconic Iao Needle. It’s perfect for someone with knee issues who wants to enjoy nature without a strenuous hike.
  • Botanical Gardens or Short Nature Walks – Consider visiting Maui Tropical Plantation near Wailuku for easy paths, gardens, and some small eateries. It’s a gentle option and provides shade and seating.
  • Lunch or Coffee at Kahului or Wailuku – There are several local cafes, bakeries, and casual restaurants in Kahului, like the Tin Roof for a quick meal or Mana Foods for snacks and local treats. This gives them a nice break while you’re hiking.

Additional notes:

  • They could also bring a book or tablet and relax in the car or under shaded areas near the trailhead if they prefer not to drive anywhere.
  • Given the 2-3 hour hike window, driving south to Kihei or north to Kapalua would likely take too much time for a quick visit, so staying within the Wailuku/Iao Valley area is the most practical choice.

In summary, Wailuku and Iao Valley offer short, scenic, and easy-to-access options for your husband and younger son while you and your older son enjoy Waihee Ridge Trail. They can mix light sightseeing with relaxing, and still be back in time for the carpool home.
